The Trials of Rebirth

The Peach Flower Spirit’s eyes dimmed slightly, and she smiled: “Three years ago, the spiritual energy I had cultivated for seventy years was absorbed by a ghost. Later, Brother Dust irrigated me with mountain spring water, which saved me, but my body often breaks down.”

I nodded, interested: “Why was your spiritual energy absorbed?”

I looked up at the falling pear blossoms, then at her pink outfit. Even an immortal in the mortal world could be so beautiful.

Just looking at her eyes made the world seem pure and untainted.

The Peach Flower Spirit cleared her throat and slowly began to speak.

She yawned tiredly and asked, “Divine Lord, can Flower rest on your lap and sleep?”

After hearing the gossip, this small reward seemed acceptable, so I nodded: “Mm.”

She smiled, contentedly lying on my lap, murmuring dreamlike: “Flower doesn’t have enough spiritual energy, and is sleepy. Yu Jiejie used to sit like this and let Flower sleep. Divine Lord, when Flower wakes up, I’ll make something delicious for you. Yu Jiejie said the dishes Flower makes are the most delicious.”

“Mm.” Watching this jade-like person sleep, I also moved more gently.

But after a long time, my leg went numb… Help, why aren’t you awake yet!

In the evening, Jian Chen returned, and I looked at him weakly, using my eyes to signal.

Jian Chen frowned and thought for a moment, then nodded firmly at me and stepped lightly into the room.

When Flower woke up, she stretched and, seeing me collapsed in the chair, laughed: “Divine Lord, Flower will make something delicious for you.”

“Go, go,” I was grateful that she finally came back to her senses. I slowly got up, my leg went weak, and I fell to the ground.

The round moon reflected in my eyes, bringing tears. If I ever have a child, I’ll never let him sleep on my lap – I’ll send him to his father.

When Jian Chen walked out of the room, I was standing and dusting myself off. Seeing him, I said: “I can’t understand why you won’t let Flower be reborn. Wouldn’t it be good for all of you if she went back?”

Jian Chen paused slightly: “She told you everything?”

“Yes.”

Jian Chen spoke in a deep voice: “What you heard may not be the ultimate truth.”

…Indeed, the moon is out, and the poet has emerged. I looked at him with disdain, then suddenly realized: “Could there be some hidden story?”

Jian Chen glanced at me and slowly said: “There’s a saying that knowing too much about external affairs will one day lead to being silenced.”

My disgust for him increased. Indeed, someone straightforward like Flower is more to my taste. Thinking this, I rushed into the kitchen. The stove was bright red with steaming heat, but why couldn’t I smell any meat? I frowned and walked over, only to see everything was green vegetables and fruits.

I twitched my face: “Flower, what are you preparing to cook for me?”

Flower smiled brightly: “Making my best vegetarian dishes for you, like… hey, Divine Lord, where are you going? Aren’t you eating?”

I waved while walking: “I’m going outside to gnaw on grass.”

“Gnaw… grass…”

I sighed. I should have remembered that cultivators seek inner purity and thus avoid meat. My expectations were too high. I could already feel my stomach protesting, so I needed to find something outside to appease my five internal organs.

My eyebrows twitched painfully: “Don’t tell me you’ve never played in the human world all this time.”

“Yes, Hua’er is running so far for the first time.”

I felt like crying without tears, and tentatively asked: “Do you know how to get to Xian Yin Pavilion?”

“Don’t know. But Yu Jiejie said if Hua’er gets lost, she can ask for directions. So Hua’er thinks, if we ask along the way, we should be able to find it.”

This train of thought… how has she survived until now…

I originally thought escaping would be fun, but now it seems not only is it not enjoyable, I’ll have to take on the role of tour guide. Otherwise, forget seven days, even seven years wouldn’t get us to Xian Yin Pavilion.

At night, we found an inn to stay. After bathing, Hua Hua immediately fell asleep on the bed. She clung so tightly I couldn’t sleep, and after a day of traveling, I was already exhausted and couldn’t get a good rest.

I struggled out of bed, stuffed the soft blanket around her, and pushed open the door, saying to the moonlight: “What sins have I committed?”

The air stilled, and when I turned my head, a handsome man in a beautiful blue robe entered my vision, pursuing quickly.

Jian Chen raised his hand to seal the wooden door, then faced me: “Divine Lord has been troubled. Hua’er is young and doesn’t understand. Please do not punish her.”

I waved my hand: “No matter.” More importantly, I was interested in him, “When do you plan to take her back? Surely you’re not waiting until she reaches Xian Yin Pavilion to act?”

Jian Chen paused, saying: “I’ll take her back tomorrow morning. I just hope the Divine Lord can return to the Divine Realm and make her give up on rebirth.”

“No.” I firmly stated, “Do you think all things in the world qualify for rebirth? Without an extremely powerful intention, one cannot communicate with the Divine Realm. Once a task is accepted, no matter who tries to stop me, this Divine Lord will complete it at all costs.”

Jian Chen’s eyes slightly froze, seeming to ponder for a long time before slowly saying: “Yu’er is already dead. Hua’er going to Xian Yin Pavilion will only find her grave.”

I was shocked, looking at him unexpectedly: “Bai Yu is dead?” I frowned, thinking about the small notebook.

Jian Chen nodded, his gaze subtly revealing a desolate color: “Before Yu’er died, she made me hide this. If Hua’er knew, she might be sad her entire life and unable to focus on cultivation.”

I said calmly: “Now that you and Bai Yu are not together, she might not be focused either.”

Jian Chen asked in a low voice: “Can the Divine Lord truly not return empty-handed?”

“Cannot.”

“Then we can only trouble the Divine Lord to continue in this mortal body.”

I glanced at him indifferently. For mortals to cultivate immortality, besides having a good foundation, one needs a pure mind. Though he developed an evil heart for his loved one, this suggests the path ahead of him is still long. Moreover, with his current physique, becoming immortal would be difficult.

Gou Hun was already accustomed to these cold words, looked at me for a long time, and then said: “Wait another half year, when it’s been a thousand years, I will tell you everything.”

I suddenly stopped in my tracks, the wind whistling past my ears, my voice trembling with anger: “Why are you telling me this sentence! Let the truth rot in your stomach.”

It’s been a thousand years, what could be so important that it can only be resolved after a thousand years and cannot be said now!” I punched him hard in the chest, enraged, “Take out your heart and show me!”

This time, I was angry that he left so matter-of-factly and returned as if nothing had happened. If he tries to get close again, I’m afraid I won’t be able to control myself. In terms of self-control, I’ve always been inferior to him, otherwise, I wouldn’t have chased him for ten whole years back then.

A thousand years ago, my head must have been washed by a flood, otherwise, how could I have fallen for such a cold, cruel, and heartless person?

I had thought this many times after our breakup.

That year during the divine and ghost war, I was injured and unconscious for a long time. The first person I saw when I opened my eyes was the Upper God’s face with a hundred pleats, and for a moment, I thought I was seeing a demon. My mind went blank, and I was so startled that I slapped him…

The Upper God, in his anger, sent me to a deserted village outside the city, a place rarely inhabited by divine lords, with no one to control me, and I was happy to be free.
