★ Chapter 1

“Merciful God, you welcome new souls into the eternal, bright, and joyful place, among the fellowship of saints in heaven; when the Lord Jesus comes again, those who died in Christ will first rise from their tombs and enjoy eternal life.”

“Amen.”

The priest kissed the silver cross. Pale light filtered through the church’s high stained-glass window, casting onto the black lacquered pine coffin.

A white woman in a black veil crouched down, covering her mouth with cold hands, barely suppressing her sobs, hugging the small boy beside her.

“…Mom?”

“Hmm?”

“Does God love the world?”

“God…” The woman trembled, taking a deep breath, her voice hoarse: “God loves all, and therefore gave his only son, so that all who believe in him shall not perish, but gain eternal life…”

“Then why are we deprived of freedom, robbed and imprisoned?”

The door behind the woman was suddenly smashed open. Countless figures rushed into the church with shouts and cries erupting. The woman only had time to remove the pendant from her neck and urgently thrust it into the boy’s hand before being grabbed by several fully armed soldiers and forcibly dragged back.

“Run, quickly!” Her desperate cry pierced the chaos: “Run, leave here!”

“Don’t look back, don’t give up!”

“Mommy loves you!…”

The church collapsed with a thunderous roar, flames turning black and white, surging toward the gloomy sky. Screams and crying dissolved into nothingness, the wind lifting bone ash and scattering it across the vast, desolate land.

The boy ran across the wilderness, soldiers and hunting dogs pursuing closely. Gradually, a sea of lights appeared, a massive city emerging beneath the cliff. The boy leaped forward amid the soldiers’ shocked and angry cries!

The wild wind howled past his ears, lifting the pendant on his chest.

The boy closed his eyes during the rapid descent, the last image reflected in his black pupils: a lonely, cold, endless night.

“Those who have died shall rise again and enjoy eternal life—”

He thought to himself:

“Amen.”

2019, T City.

The young man sat up in the darkness, electric-like pain surging through every nerve. Dizziness from the pain caused immediate retching. However, having not eaten for a day, his stomach could produce nothing, only his internal organs twisting violently. After a while, he finally caught his breath, his vision barely focusing, revealing a small, dark cell with weak light filtering through the iron bars.

Where is this? A prison?

How did I get here?

He tried to search for useful information from his chaotic mind but couldn’t even recall his own name, and any attempt to think caused unbearable headaches. Just as he tried to get up from the low bed, footsteps and voices suddenly came from outside the cell.

The soldier behind him left with empty hands, and the young man’s pupils narrowed slightly – now was the moment.

“Bring the Omega to the helicopter, don’t let them escape, transport back to base…”

The soldier was about to respond when suddenly he felt the young Omega in his arms slightly shift, leaning towards the ground from his arm.

His first reaction was to bend down and grab him, but in that instant, the young man who had been deeply unconscious reached for the holster at his waist, hooked and pulled out the gun, dropping to one knee.

This change was too sudden. The soldier’s roar had not yet escaped his throat when in the same second, the young man’s long leg swept out, instantly knocking him down.

Bang!

“What’s happening? Stop!”

Shocked cries erupted around them. The young man grabbed the Alpha soldier’s hair and slammed his head into the ground, then lifted the blood-covered soldier, pressing the gun barrel against his temple, using him as a human shield: “…Retreat…”

He wanted to say “retreat, don’t move,” but the long period of unconsciousness had left his throat hoarse. Several seconds later, he gasped and shouted forcefully: “Stop! Put down your weapons!”

All the soldiers approaching in the hall changed color and stopped simultaneously, forming a fan-shaped encirclement, the scene tense and explosive.

“Colonel, there’s an emergency -“

Tang Hao hung up the phone and looked up: “What?”

“An Omega is resisting,” the deputy pointed towards the nearby hall, his expression shocked and angry: “He’s taken our people hostage and wants to escape!”

The young man’s uncontrollable heavy breathing mixed with the Alpha soldier’s trembling breaths. The soldier felt the cold gun barrel at his temple and involuntarily swallowed several bloody mouthfuls of saliva, rasping: “Put… put me down, you can’t escape… Ah!”

The young man’s iron-like hand dug deep into his throat: “—Shut up.”

This was the public area of the prison, circular in shape, but now filled with fully armed soldiers. The young man roughly estimated with his peripheral vision – at least a hundred. Outside the encirclement, the ground was covered with first aid equipment and stretchers covered in white cloth, with countless bodies unseen. The air was permeated with gunpowder, char, blood, and rotting flesh.

What was this? A riot? A war?

The exit further in the hall was blocked by a solid iron screen door. In the gatehouse, a man in camouflage, with slightly darker skin and extremely tall stature, pushed open the door and strode over. The young man stepped back, his vigilant gaze fixed on the man’s face, until he parted the crowd and approached, standing a few steps away, raising his hand to draw the gun from his waist, revealing the colonel’s shoulder insignia on his coat.

“Release my man,” Tang Hao looked at the young Omega who had retreated step by step to the wall. Though he was muscular from special forces training, his deliberately modulated voice would not create too much pressure: “—We saved you. The city has already fallen. You can’t escape.”

The young man closed his eyes under his stare, then opened them again: “Who are you?”

Tang Hao did not directly answer his question: “Our mission is to search for and protect Omegas as precious strategic resources until we can safely escort you back to base. You won’t be in any danger. The base is prepared to take you in and will soon transfer you to a safe zone…”

The young man was slightly stunned, not understanding where this sorrowful knowledge came from.

“Release your hostage, and we’ll act like nothing happened. If my soldiers were discourteous to you, I can apologize on their behalf…”

“No… no.” The young man interrupted Tang Hao’s words, his back pressed against the wall, gasping and shaking his head: “Put down your guns and let me leave. I must… right now…”

Tang Hao was about to say something when his expression suddenly changed.
