Blooming Roses

The next morning, Lin Mengmeng, with the signed divorce agreement in hand, was about to find Shao Tingyu when she was called to an impromptu meeting. In the temporary meeting room, the director spoke with a grave expression: “Our hospital’s earthquake relief efforts are nearing an end. Everyone can leave by car tomorrow, but we need some to stay for the follow-up rescue.” Hearing this, Lin Mengmeng glanced towards Shao Tingyu, only to meet his gaze. Their eyes met briefly before she looked away. The director continued, “The follow-up rescue will last for a week, not long. Those who wish to volunteer, please sign up.” The room fell silent; most had families and surgeries waiting back home, making it impossible for them to stay.

After the meeting, everyone dispersed, but Lin Mengmeng approached the director: “Director, I would like to stay for the follow-up rescue.” The director was surprised: “Are you sure?” “My only family was lost in the earthquake. As a healthcare worker, I want to contribute my part.” Lin Mengmeng nodded, thinking of the children she had been caring for who still needed help. The director, touched by her words, agreed.

Once the decision was made, Lin Mengmeng left the meeting room and saw Shao Tingyu and Dai Xinyan chatting not far away. They say when someone loves you, your eyes light up. Dai Xinyan’s eyes sparkled when she looked at Shao Tingyu. At that moment, Lin Mengmeng couldn’t bring herself to approach, her steps frozen. Sensing her gaze, both looked over. Shao Tingyu whispered something to Dai Xinyan, who then left, and he walked towards Lin Mengmeng. “What did you discuss with the director?”

Lin Mengmeng didn’t respond; she simply handed the already prepared divorce agreement to Shao Tingyu: “Sign it.” Looking at the folded white paper, Shao Tingyu, puzzled, took it. Upon opening it, the five bold characters “Divorce Agreement” caught his eye. Shao Tingyu’s eyes narrowed, and he looked up at her: “What’s the meaning of this?” Lin Mengmeng gazed into the man’s deep eyes, feigning relief as she forced a smile: “After all these days, I’ve figured things out.”
