Blooming Roses

That night, Lin Mengmeng dreamt. She dreamt of the Chinese New Year’s Eve, where she finally met her brother, and told him about her marriage to Shao Tingyu. The person she loved most and her dearest family finally met, they had a reunion dinner, and talked for a long time… But the dream was beautiful, and reality was desolate, making Lin Mengmeng reluctant to wake up.

The morning sunlight brought a gentle light into the ward. Lin Mengmeng squinted, unaccustomed to the light, as her long-numbed body began to feel movement. As long as she didn’t engage in vigorous activity, daily living was manageable. The nurse, who was on good terms with Shao Tingyu, reported Lin Mengmeng’s recovery progress to him in detail. After lunch break, Shao Tingyu entered the ward to find Lin Mengmeng attempting to scoop porridge with a spoon, a simple task that took considerable effort for her. She scooped up the white porridge with her slightly trembling hand and slid it into her esophagus. As the sweet porridge melted in her throat, Lin Mengmeng nearly burst into tears. At least she could still swallow, still breathe, which meant she could continue to live. Shao Tingyu, standing beside her, couldn’t bear to watch any longer. He walked straight up to her, “Let me feed you.” Just as he was about to touch the spoon, Lin Mengmeng blocked his hand, “No need, I can do it myself.” Her inner desire to survive was strong; she didn’t want Shao Tingyu’s charity. Lin Mengmeng looked up at Shao Tingyu’s surprised gaze and gave a faint smile, “Let me eat by myself when I can.” That’s how Lin Mengmeng was, outwardly gentle like jade, but inwardly more stubborn than anyone else. She didn’t want to trouble others with anything, wanting to handle everything on her own.
