Crazy Smartphone – Part One

Lin Feng sat down, still the last to enter, clueless about what was happening. Seeing everyone enjoying the commotion, he raised his hand, wanting to join in the fun. But just as he was about to clap, his eyes met Wang Xiaoyun’s as she walked back to her seat. Her eyes wide with fury, she glared at Lin Feng, making his heart skip a beat. He froze, hands half-raised like a surrendering soldier, unable to complete the clap. “What’s with the head class monitor? Why is she giving me such a look? Does she think I wrote that stuff? That’s an injustice! Why would I, Lin Feng, write such nonsense when I’m not even in the mood for romance?”

While he was still lost in thought, the homeroom teacher, Li Xiangdong, entered the classroom. Li Xiangdong was a man in his forties, teaching math, with an extremely conservative and old-fashioned mindset, though not old in age. Rumors suggested he had a dubious personal life, akin to a hypocrite. His face was ashen, clearly upset by something or someone. He stormed in, unleashing a tirade, his voice echoing through the room like he had just swallowed gunpowder. “I could hear you all the way from the hallway! Have you all grown bold, huh? Are you all ready for the exams, huh? Now you have the mood for fun, huh? With the college entrance exam around the corner, what’s with all this laughter, huh? Dear classmates, time waits for no one, don’t let your youth go to waste…”

Just then, someone’s phone started ringing: “You have a new message, please check it. You have a new message…” “Whose phone is that?!” Li Xiangdong slammed the podium, almost cursing like a shrew. “Do you still see me as your teacher? I’ve said it repeatedly, no phones in class, and definitely no playing with them during class! Who dares to be so defiant, huh? Do you think my words are just hot air, huh?” Li Xiangdong was fond of using “huh” to end his sentences, as if he couldn’t speak without it.

The message tone beeped again from another corner of the room. Bang! Bang bang! The podium creaked in agony, looking like it might collapse under Li Xiangdong’s iron palm. “Who’s phone is this, huh?” Beep beep beep, and again, from yet another place. “Alright… you, you, you… you’re deliberately causing trouble, aren’t you, huh? Can’t I control you anymore, huh? Who had their phone ringing, huh? Stand up now! Huh!”

Just as he finished his roar, the message tone beeped again, this time from his own pocket. “Damn it!” Li Xiangdong, caught in his own fury, looked embarrassed and quickly pressed his phone through his pocket to silence it. A stifled chuckle spread through the once silent classroom, clearly amused by the chaotic symphony of message tones. But it was strange; usually, Li Xiangdong’s class was as quiet as a graveyard, so who dared to stir the pot today?

“Roar my ass, the moment he steps up there, he acts all high and mighty, like a sanctimonious hypocrite. I’m here to learn, not to be yelled at like a dog!” Lin Feng grumbled, lying on his desk, thoroughly annoyed at the raging homeroom teacher on the podium.

I don’t know what’s going on, but today, hearing this hypocritical beast speak just filled me with anger; I really wanted to get up and leave immediately. Li Xiangdong has a rather bad reputation when it comes to his personal conduct. Rumors have been circulating in the school that he’s involved in a teacher-student relationship. Yet, he’s extremely arrogant, disregarding these rumors with disdain, and always claims to be a role model for others, insisting on setting an example in everything. Today, before class, he heard the chaotic noise from his classroom from afar. Known for his strict teaching style, he couldn’t tolerate such unruly behavior from his students. He wanted to use the sound of a text message notification to restore order, to tighten the students’ loose nerves. But, of all times, his own unlucky phone also started ringing incessantly, as if it was joining in the chaos. “Ahem… let’s review first!” With that, Li Xiangdong slipped out of the classroom. Although he never parted with his phone, it rarely rang once in ten days or half a month, let alone received a text message. Fearing it might be something urgent, Li Xiangdong hurried out of the classroom to check his message. At the same time, three students in the classroom, who also received texts, eagerly pulled out their phones. “Hey, check this out, what’s the content this time!” “Hey, hey, is it signed ‘Your Wind of Love’?” “No way, I didn’t see that guy pull out his phone earlier…” “Shh! Old Li is back…” Li Xiangdong returned to the podium with a strange expression, not mentioning the phone incident, and began teaching methodically. However, it was clear he was somewhat distracted, his gaze often drifting towards the students below — especially the top female students.

During the break, Class 3-5 became even more lively, like a bustling market. The three girls who received the text became the center of attention, with everyone crowding around asking questions. Lin Feng, with his worries, lay on the desk looking like he was about to die, ignoring the surrounding noise. However, for some reason, classmates kept using excuses to rummage around his seat, and some of his usual acquaintances were even more blatant, searching his body under the guise of finding something. “Got something good to share, Fengzi…” His desk-mate, Sun Dasheng, muttered in his ear more than once, looking somewhat mysterious. Chaos, endless chaos! Don’t forget to leave me some tickets for the 010 School Beauty’s Appointment.

By lunchtime, Lin Feng felt increasingly exhausted, not wanting to get up to go home for lunch. As the classroom emptied, the class monitor, Wang Xiaoyun, approached, knocking on Lin Feng’s desk. “Lin Feng, I’m treating you to lunch!” “What??” Lin Feng’s overly dramatic reaction startled Wang Xiaoyun. “I’m treating you to lunch! Are you coming or not!” Why so fierce when inviting someone to lunch? Lin Feng looked at Wang Xiaoyun in confusion, but she didn’t seem inclined to explain further, just stood there with her arms crossed, scrutinizing him. Wow, the sun must have risen from the west today! Normally, this class monitor wouldn’t even give a second glance to a student like him, considered the dregs. What did she say just now? She wants to treat me to lunch? Did I faint from hunger and mishear?

Lin Feng tried to widen his panda-like eyes, still in disbelief. He wanted to find an answer on Wang Xiaoyun’s face, but all he saw was her nose almost pointing to the sky, showing not a hint of sincerity in her invitation. Wang Xiaoyun was known as the school’s ice beauty; in all this time, it seemed she had never smiled. Yet, she was excellent at studies and had an otherworldly beauty, akin to the legendary Little Dragon Girl from the Ancient Tomb Sect. Countless boys had tried to win her favor, but none had ever succeeded, and now she was actually inviting him to lunch?!

“Class monitor… don’t kid around… I, I, I…” Lin Feng was at a loss, stuttering without managing a coherent sentence. It wasn’t that he was too proud to accept, but he wasn’t so excited as to lose his senses, feeling he might not handle the kindness of such a beauty, wanting to go yet hesitating. Most importantly, he had dreamt of being intimate with Wang Xiaoyun last night, their relationship developing rather closely; he didn’t want to ruin that rare fantasy. He even hoped to continue the “My Date with the School Beauty” series in his next dream.
