Crazy Smartphone – Part One

Xu Xiaoman was not polite in her speech at all; she was still upset about Lin Feng destroying her equipment. When she entered, she saw the music box shattered on the floor, which she had intended to give to him as a playful gift. Now, what was supposed to be a light-hearted prank had turned serious since he had actually ruined his own good time, right? And the bug? The miniature listening device hidden in that wad of tissue, which was for legitimate use, if lost, she’d be reported to the equipment department again. Xu Xiaoman wanted to search through the paper balls on the ground but realized that although they weren’t the remnants of some sport’s cleanup, her repeated interest in such items might lead others to think she had certain unsavory tastes.

However, Wang Xiaoyun didn’t have such complex thoughts. Seeing Lin Feng rush out of his room fully clothed, she was completely at ease, especially when she heard the little vixen, Lan Yu, coming out from the bathroom direction, which further confirmed that nothing untoward had happened in those few minutes she was away. This meant Lin Feng had completely withstood Lan Yu’s seduction. Ha, what was there to worry about then? Seeing Lin Feng slumped on the sofa, pulling at his hair, her heart softened, and all the severe interrogation tactics she and Xu Xiaoman had planned before entering were forgotten. “Feng, does your head hurt?” she asked, squatting beside Lin Feng, gently taking his hand, and soothing him. Lin Feng’s body stiffened involuntarily, and he looked up with red eyes, “Xiaoyun, I’m fine, a grown man shouldn’t cry! Okay, okay, you can go now, Little Feng!” Wang Xiaoyun, seeing Lin Feng’s cautious look, suddenly got playful, mimicking lines from a TV drama and joking with him.

Lin Feng stared at Wang Xiaoyun in astonishment, “Xiaoyun, do you, do you really trust me so much? I, actually…” He glanced at Xu Xiaoman who was glaring at him from the side, and the words he was about to confess were swallowed back down. Xu Xiaoman huffed, “Why are you looking at me? If you two want to talk privately, go to your room, so you don’t have to see me here!” She thought, only a silly girl like Xiaoyun would so easily believe this scoundrel’s sweet talk. You two should go back to your room to flirt, and I’ll take the chance to look for that bug. This scoundrel, despite his young age, has quite the skill in counter-surveillance, finding the bug in such a concealed spot. But did he really do nothing to disappoint Xiaoyun? Humph, looking at how guilty he seems, I doubt he’s been that innocent! How could he resist such a seductive woman throwing herself at him? Xu Xiaoman imagined some unsavory scenarios, doubting, with her understanding of male psychology, that nothing had happened between Lin Feng and Lan Yu in that short time.

Remembering how this little pervert had lusted after her in the car, she couldn’t help but question Lin Feng’s true identity once again: “The Merciless Ghost Hand”, a super hacker, skilled in technology, suspected to be the instigator of the 510 Sino-American Cyber War, who had openly provoked the U.S. military and intelligence agencies, hacking into their websites and stealing numerous confidential files; he had also proactively provided critical intelligence to the Yushan City Police before the Yushan Mountain bandit den case, aiding in the complete eradication of the long-standing cult, Sheng Yang Jiao; Lin Feng, a senior at Yushan High School, from an ordinary family, with unknown martial arts skills and an extraordinary set of mysterious footwork, his family background all checked out, suspected to be a person with supernatural abilities, recently entered the special task force of the National Security Bureau’s Ninth Division for evaluation but was not selected. Could these two vastly different identities, worlds apart, belong to the same person? This was the information Xu Xiaoman had extracted with great effort from the confidential archives. At her clearance level, this was as far as she could delve, and even to gather this much, she had exerted herself to the utmost. Yet, this answer did not satisfy her. Ever since she encountered this kid at the electronics market, she had an intuitive feeling that he wasn’t just an ordinary high school student, and indeed, subsequent events confirmed her judgment. However, according to the data she had, this kid had no record of significant misdeeds, and all these rumors about him had only started to surface in the last month. For this somewhat enigmatic Lin Feng, Xu Xiaoman subconsciously wanted to know more about him, and that desire was unusually strong.

With the comfort of his beloved, Lin Feng’s mood immediately brightened: “Hehe, Sister Xiaoman, you actually knew from the start that this was a misunderstanding, didn’t you? You know that girl, right? What exactly does she do? How can she switch between being Japanese and Chinese so quickly? It’s a bit too fast, don’t you think? Xiaowen, what do you say?”

“Cut it out, are you trying to embarrass me? Why should I explain on your behalf? If you have nothing to hide, why do you need me to go out of my way to explain for you? Besides, if we don’t create opportunities for some one-on-one time, how would we know if some people are truly consistent in their actions and loyal to one person? They wouldn’t even look up when faced with temptation, right? Hehe, Sister Xiaoman, it’s ‘never bow your head’, you’ve got the idiom wrong!”

“Cut it, you silly girl, what do you know? It’s ‘never look up’!” Xiaoman suddenly realized Lin Feng was still there, knowing she had misspoken, she quickly coughed, trying to cover it up. However, Wang Xiaowen, oblivious, was still earnestly correcting her mistake. Lin Feng, understanding the implication behind Xu Xiaoman’s words, blushed with embarrassment, his admiration for this bold policewoman growing, feeling closer to her than before, no longer just the wild cop who would kidnap him into a car at any moment.

Xu Xiaoman, irritated by Lin Feng’s half-smiling expression, snapped, “Alright, alright, you two lovebirds go inside and enjoy yourselves, I need to sit down and rest for a bit.” With that, she turned Wang Xiaowen around and pushed her towards Lin Feng’s bedroom. “Don’t be shy, I’ve seen it all, go on, hurry up!”

Just then, Lin Feng’s mother suddenly emerged from the bedroom, seeing the three in playful banter, she coughed twice as a greeting. Xu Xiaoman awkwardly laughed, trying to make conversation, “Mom’s here, Miss Yu’er.” Seeing Lin Feng’s mother staring at them with a stern look, Xu Xiaoman felt a bit guilty, wondering why she was being looked at as if she were some ancient matchmaker, trying to pair off her son with someone for his fortune or life.

“Lin Lin, shouldn’t you be doing your homework?”

“Ah? Oh, I don’t have much homework today, Mom, don’t worry. But, why is she still in there? When is she leaving?”

“Yu’er won’t be leaving for now!”

“Why? Why is she still lingering in our house? I hardly know her!”

“She won’t leave, and that’s final. There are some who should leave!”

“Mom, who are you talking about?!”

“The one in there is the one who should leave the most!”

“Say less!” Lin Feng’s mother scolded, then glanced at the uneasy Wang Xiaowen before turning to her son, “Lin Lin, come here!”

Lin Feng sensed something was off; his mother’s sudden stern face was unusual for her, especially with guests. Had Lan Yu said something to his mother? Was she trying to force a quick resolution? Indeed, mother and son were on the same wavelength. After his mother called him aside, her first words shocked Lin Feng.

“Quickly get them to leave!”

“Huh, Mom, you want them to leave?”
