As Ling Feng stepped through the door, he saw Chen Shu pacing in the courtyard, muttering, “Buddha protect!” Suddenly, a cry mixed with pain gripped his heart.
Lan’er was about to give birth! He quickly strode to Chen Shu.
“Young master, you’re back! The madam is about to give birth. She’s been calling for you! Go see her quickly!” Chen Shu said, overjoyed.
Ling Feng anxiously knocked on the door: “Lan’er, I’m back!”
Her tired body and mind instantly became excited upon hearing his voice: “Yue Xiang, open the door quickly!”
“Okay.”
Ling Feng walked to the bedside and saw the small woman whose face was pale and hair disheveled from the ordeal. His heart ached, and he took a deep breath, tightly holding her hand.
“Don’t be afraid! I’m here!” He gently caressed her face and kissed her forehead.
“Ling Feng, it’s so good you’re back! I’m not scared. The midwife said it’s two treasures! I’m so happy!” Lan’er cried and laughed.
Suddenly, a heart-wrenching pain engulfed her.
“Young master, please go out! The child is about to come out. It’s not good for men to see blood,” the midwife gently pushed him out.
“Ling Feng, just go out. I’m fine.” Lan’er encouraged him with her eyes.
She recalled a colleague mentioning her husband fainting during childbirth, and she didn’t want him to witness such a moment, knowing childbirth was a significant trial for women.
“Then you must work hard! I’ll be right outside. Call me if you need anything,” he urged, still worried.
“Listen to my instructions. Take a deep breath, push.” Following the midwife’s guidance, Lan’er coordinated with the baby’s movements. After about five attempts, the baby’s head finally emerged.
“Good, madam, one more push. The head is out. Push!” Lan’er felt something slip from her body, instantly feeling much lighter.
With a “slap” on the baby’s bottom, a loud cry rang out.
“Madam, it’s a boy. Don’t relax; there’s another one—push!” The midwife quickly wrapped the boy and placed him on the bed, ready for the next.
The second child arrived more easily. Another brief pain, a slip, and suddenly the excruciating pain was gone. She touched her flat stomach, her face radiating joy.
