Lone Hawk

Chapter Fifty-Eight The warm-toned desk lamp illuminated the quiet study. The man’s breathing was clear and heavy, while wind rustled the pages on the desk through the open window.

The computer emitted a pale blue light, casting on Gao Xiquan’s slightly pale face. He was focused on this quarter’s report, feeling a bit of a headache and labored breathing. Physical discomfort distracted him more and more.

He frowned, picking up the cold coffee and taking a resentful gulp. Lately, his physical discomfort had been overwhelming, making him prone to fatigue. He pressed his brow; too many things were unsettled, and he couldn’t afford to collapse.

He needed to concentrate, arrange everything properly—

Eventually, he immersed himself in work, unknowingly sitting at the desk for over an hour. Suddenly, an uncomfortable sensation swept through his chest. He bent over, pressing his chest as a violent coughing fit struck, but he felt much better afterward.

He pulled a tissue from the desk, wiping his lips. The bright red spots on the pristine white paper pierced his eyes. He crumpled it and threw it into the corner.

Closing his eyes, he sank into the large sofa, as if drained of strength. His gaze rested on his pale fingers, coated in desolation. That ring symbolizing eternal love would never be worn on his finger again. A faint hatred spread in his heart; life and love could not be easily rewritten.

High Ji Xuan struggled to prop himself up and walked to the window, pulling open the silver curtain. Under the windowsill, Jing Xin had planted rose branches, which had grown lush and vibrant. The branches swayed in the night wind, close yet unreal, as if separated by vast distances.

He pondered the near future, when they would be forever apart. He had once told Jing Xin, “In the next life, I will definitely meet you earlier!”

At that time, his illness was not confirmed, but he already felt a vague unease about potentially losing her. He expressed a wish to meet her earlier in the next life than Jiang Xiang Yang, sensing that their fate in this life seemed to have run its course.

With such a shallow connection, he wondered if there would be a chance to meet her again in the next life or if he was deceiving himself.
