Lone Hawk

The man on the bed locked his gaze on her, his eyes shifting from gloom to something softer. Jing Xin lowered her head, lost in unhappy thoughts, as her furrowed brow revealed her inner turmoil.

The man closed his eyes, reflecting on his father’s words: he indeed didn’t want to live, so let him die.

He remembered being spirited, radiating light and drawing attention. Living now, mocked and breathing weakly, felt worse than peaceful death.

Feeling the woman’s warm hand on his arm, he half-opened his eyes in confusion. She was untying his restraints. Did she not understand the situation?

As soon as his hands were free, he grabbed Jing Xin’s neck, his hoarse voice escaping: “Do you want to die? I’m already a waste, I have nothing left.”

To his surprise, the woman’s face turned red, but she didn’t struggle. A tear fell from her tightly closed eyes, landing hot on his hand, making his grip loosen.

Jing Xin coughed violently, gasping for air. After a moment, her pale face returned to normal. Her gaze met his, and for a second, he felt something crash into his heart.

The woman seemed serene, her eyes lively like a blue lotus, swirling with a misty air.

Chapter Forty-Two

“If you don’t want your brain harmed by sedatives and lose independence, I suggest you take the medicine,” she said, picking up the medicine and checking its temperature.

It was warm as Jing Xin scooped a small spoonful to the man’s mouth. He pressed his lips together, frowning in annoyance. She said nothing, holding the spoon with infinite patience, as if willing to wait him out.

Time passed slowly, and her hand began to tremble slightly. She suspected she would fail soon.

Suddenly, the man slightly parted his lips. Jing Xin blinked, smiled softly, and fed him the medicine, carefully wiping it from the corners of his mouth after each spoonful. After the last spoonful, she sighed in relief.

Standing up and rubbing her stiff waist, she said, “Okay, you’ve taken the medicine. I have to go now. Rest well and don’t joke about your health anymore.”

The man remained silent, his clear eyes watching her quietly.

Jing Xin had reached the door but turned back, “By the way, what’s your name?”
