Love in Shackles

“Let’s go, I’ll take you to the hospital.” I wiped my tears, opened the passenger door for him to sit, then got into the driver’s seat.

As the car left the residential area, Ye Zhengchen told me, “Go to City Hospital.”

“City Hospital? You’ve been staying there this whole time?”

“Mm.”

No further explanation was needed. I understood why he didn’t go to People’s Hospital, why he ran out to walk with me. Everything he did was driven by one simple, ordinary word.

“Are you still angry with me?” Ye Zhengchen asked.

“Not angry anymore.”

I’m not angry at him. I’m angry at myself.

From our first reunion in the presidential suite, I was already wavering. I thought my refusal was firm enough that he would give up like three years ago. I forgot who Ye Zhengchen was, how he could see through my hesitation.

He knew whether a woman was reluctant or willing in bed. All my inner conflicts, my mixed signals, he saw clearly but didn’t expose because he didn’t want to force me.

He chose to use any means necessary.

“You don’t hate me?” he asked, looking at me strangely. “Why?”

“It’s my fault,” I replied seriously. “If I had agreed to your request on the first day and come back, you wouldn’t have needed to do all this, and Zhong Tian wouldn’t be in this situation.”

Ye Zhengchen leaned back in his seat, staring out the window. I couldn’t see his expression, only his hand pressed against his chest.

The road ahead was familiar, yet I couldn’t distinguish the direction, much like knowing right from wrong but being unable to identify who was right or wrong in this situation.

The car drove steadily along the straight road, and I was grateful it was the only option, sparing me further choices.

At Nanzhou City Hospital, Ye Zhengchen brought me to his ward, which resembled a luxurious private suite. It lacked a kitchen but had all other facilities, including a luxurious double bed.

A young nurse rushed in upon seeing Ye Zhengchen. “You’re finally back. Dr. Lin has come many times to check your wound.”

I helped Ye Zhengchen sit on the hospital bed and urged the nurse, “His wound is bleeding; quickly call a doctor.”
