The night deepened, with exhilarating performances. After another explosive act, the entertainment hall’s lights went out, and music vanished, plunging the space into silence. Just as I was about to ask Zheng Wei if the show was over, the ceiling opened, and moonlight poured through the glass arched roof, illuminating the hall in a dreamlike glow.
I saw a woman on stage. A beam of light revealed a brown-haired Western beauty in a bright red chiffon dress, her fair skin visible. Passionate rock music started, and she swayed her waist around a silver-white pole, her legs elegant and fluid. The atmosphere was electric, with cheers, whistles, and applause. It felt almost too… capitalist!
After a brief shock, I fixed my gaze on Ye Zhengchen, wanting to see if this military man could resist the corruption of capitalist dregs. To my surprise, he wasn’t watching the performance but looking at the empty seat beside him and then at Zheng Wei’s vacant chair, his eyes wandering around the hall as if searching for something.
After a while, he took out his phone and dialed. Soon, my phone rang—I didn’t need to check the caller ID to know who it was.
When the call connected, Ye Zhengchen’s slightly drunk voice was tinged with anxiety. “Where are you, girl?”
I answered honestly. “I’m on the balcony, chatting with Zheng Wei.”
“Chatting?” He looked around again. “Chatting about what?”
“Just casual chat.”
He finally saw me, ended the call, and walked towards us.
Moments later, the balcony curtain lifted; Ye Zhengchen gave Zheng Wei a deep look before pulling me close and speaking loud enough for Zheng Wei to hear. “I forgot to tell you, apparently chatting with him carries a risk of pregnancy.”
Zheng Wei retorted, “As a medical doctor, you need to be responsible for what you’re saying.”
Ye Zhengchen replied seriously, “I’m suggesting you go get checked; you definitely have the capability.”
“Thanks for the advice!”
“Don’t mention it! Let me give you another piece of advice, there’s a good show inside; don’t miss it…”
“What’s the good show?”
“What do you think?”
Zheng Wei suddenly realized, tapping his forehead. “I understand!” I stifled a laugh; if he didn’t get it, explaining would be hard!
