Toppling Cities and Nations
When the clock’s second hand pointed to six o’clock, Mo Xiaoji, dressed in a crisp white professional suit, promptly stepped out of the Hengan Building, standing on the steps and watching the setting sun hanging on the horizon slowly melt into a red, chaotic glow.
Mo Xiaoji took a deep breath, sat on the steps, took out her spare sports shoes from her bag, bent down, removed her high heels, and changed into the sports shoes. In a professional suit with sports shoes, she looked somewhat out of place.
“Ji, heading back to your witch village again,” a teasing voice sounded behind her.
Mo Xiaoji turned around; it was her partner and classmate Lin Yi.
Mo Xiaoji smiled and made a face at Lin Yi: “What’s wrong with the witch village? The handsome guys in the witch village can still catch your eye, Lin Beauty.”
At the mention of handsome guys, a bright light flashed in Lin Yi’s eyes.
Moxiaoji watched as the last wisp of sunset was about to dissipate at the horizon, quickly waving to Lin Yi before turning and striding towards a small path beside the building.
The street was already flickering with neon lights, crowded with pedestrians. This wide road represented the city’s most prosperous commercial district and a must-visit spot for tourists.
To the south of the building was a natural lake with a sorrowful name: Bitter Feelings Lake. The water was clear and rippling, with lush grass along the shore.
Eerie Atmosphere
Perhaps many people cannot understand that by passing through the tallest Hengan Building and walking along a desolate path, you would see a different scene.
Overgrown with wild grass, with jagged rocks and tangled ancient trees. Among the ancient trees, rocks, and wild grass, several dilapidated low wooden houses were hidden, scattered like stars arranged in a strange formation.
Moxiaoji was now walking through this area.
Furious, Moxiaoji stomped on the vigorous wild grass, passing through ancient trees with branches climbing for thousands of years, stepping on uneven stone fragments, nearly falling several times.
She now truly missed the narrow path she had walked for over a decade going to school, where not a single blade of grass grew, unlike now: “Ouch! Accidentally, my face was harshly scratched by a reed, my cheek burning painfully.”
“I’ll stomp you to death, I’ll stomp you to death,” Moxiaoji fiercely trampled the reed until it was completely crushed, then stopped.
The last bit of light at the horizon was about to disappear, and cold sweat began to seep from Moxiaoji’s forehead.
Although she had grown up here, she was still not accustomed to its desolation.
When she was young, this was an undeveloped mountain range with towering ancient trees.
Snakes and insects were dense, and even large tigers and leopards occasionally appeared. The people in their village had lived in the ancient dense forest for generations, with almost no contact with the outside world.
But since the opening up, this place gradually had human presence, and because of its beautiful scenery and the unique Bitter Feelings Lake, it was gradually favored by the country and developed into a medium-sized tourist city. Their village was gradually pushed to the edge of the city from the dense forest of ancient trees.
Moxiaoji quite liked these changes, but her grandmother and village uncles gradually became worried. They hated the strangers curious about their village and their ancient way of life exposed to public view.
The sky grew darker, and Moxiaoji’s pace quickened. She didn’t want to remain in this spine-chilling dense forest before it was completely dark.
Every time she was in this forest, Moxiaoji felt like someone was following her. This bone-chilling feeling was something many people must have experienced, especially in some eerie places like a hospital at night, or a dormitory with rumors of strange incidents.
Footsteps were so light they were almost inaudible, yet undeniably present.
This feeling was clearer than the previous times. She seemed to smell a faint, indescribable fragrance in the damp forest air – sweet yet slightly bitter, like the musty smell emanating from an old piece of equipment.
“Why are you following me? Come out, I see you!”
Eerie Footsteps
Mo Xiaoji’s questioning voice hung in the air, drifting into the dense forest, creating a slight echo. Within her own echo, she heard a subtle response matching her voice, followed by a light mocking laugh.
Mo Xiaoji’s nerves tightened again, and she closed her mouth, determined not to call out a second time.
As a child, she occasionally felt followed, but never with such a definite sense of someone’s presence. Perhaps it wasn’t human, or maybe… a ghost. A spirit of someone who died unjustly in this forest, teasing this timid young girl to pass the long journey of reincarnation.
Mo Xiaoji’s hair stood on end from her own imagination.
The footsteps behind her seemed to grow heavier, as if aware of her fear, becoming more menacing.
Mo Xiaoji’s eyes darted around, hoping to catch a glimpse of the other’s shadow in the faint moonlight. However, she was disappointed – on the ground, there was only her own faint, ethereal shadow, and nothing else.
At first, Mo Xiaoji hadn’t noticed anything strange about her shadow, but after looking multiple times, she discovered something odd.
For instance, horns growing on her head, then her belly suddenly swelling, and then missing a leg.
“Ah!” Mo Xiaoji screamed and ran away.
In her heart, she viciously cursed her brother Yu for not coming to pick her up from work today.
Brother Yu rarely missed an appointment, even in rainy weather.
Sometimes she wondered if Brother Yu had ever experienced such a strange feeling.
