I could no longer guess the reason for their mutations, I could only speculate: it was as if creatures in a horror movie were mutating, or like in a chilling horror story where someone bitten by a zombie would also turn into a zombie to bite others in a chain reaction. First the cat, then the cockroach, and what next? Moreover, the mutated cockroaches all burrowed out at once, which reminded me of the cat’s sudden attack on me. Could it be that they were all moving due to the same cause? Before I could make any specific connections, the voice of the caretaker came through the hallway; the school had reacted very quickly, already preparing insecticide for spraying throughout the building. However, the insecticide was highly toxic, and everyone was now required to evacuate the building immediately. So, everyone rushed out in a panic. I saw Su Ying’s pale face, biting her lower lip tightly, looking as if she had been frightened, so I wanted to say something to comfort her but couldn’t think of how to explain this bizarre event. Su Ying and I took a taxi back to Zhidan Yuan. All the way, my mind was filled with the image of the cat being run over by a truck, and the cockroach, after being chopped in half, still crawling around. It was truly disgusting. Yet, the real reason was still a mystery, making me feel uneasy. When the car stopped, I saw the archaeological site not far from the entrance, and I vaguely felt there must be some hidden secrets related to it. Everything had been normal before I moved into Zhidan Yuan, but in just a few days, so many strange things had happened. The only connection I could think of was the archaeological event. This should be an intuition, though I now feel it’s also a bad habit of inviting trouble. However, there was no evidence linking these strange occurrences to the archaeology, so I should consider the potential connections between the cat and the cockroach.
