The Enigma Squad

This sense of debt was one of the connections between the deceased and the living world. If not resolved, Lü Lu’s soul would be unable to accept that she had already died, and would instinctively resist leaving her body. If Luo Yingbai wanted to take her out before the body could no longer be used, it could potentially damage her soul and affect her reincarnation.

At present, the drawbacks of the evil technique of bodily resurrection were already beginning to show. Lü Lu would experience confusion when hearing about past events, accompanied by dizziness and lack of strength.

When Lü Lu fell on the sofa, she didn’t actually faint. In that instant, she seemed to experience an incredibly mysterious feeling, with all her consciousness intact, as if she had suddenly entered another space.

Cold, dark, silent, with faint sounds of chains dragging and ghost wails in the distance, the sounds very soft, as if separated by some barrier.

Lü Lu looked around but saw nothing. An authoritative voice suddenly shouted near her ear: “Lü Lu, your life span has ended. Why are you lingering in the human world, refusing to return?”

“Lü Lu, Lü Lu, wake up.”

Suddenly, the authoritative, loud voice was interrupted by a gentle whisper. For some reason, Lü Lu felt an extreme longing and desire for that voice.

She wandered bewildered in the darkness, anxiously asking, “Where are you?”

The voice didn’t answer her, but she suddenly felt a force on her hand. Immediately, Lü Lu felt herself lifted, and before she could cry out, her vision was restored to brightness.

She opened her eyes to see her parents looking fearfully at her from in front of the sofa. Luo Yingbai was positioned slightly further away, not looking at her, leaning against the wall with his head down, looking almost like a poster.

“Lu Lu, what happened?” her mother asked carefully, her tone much softer than before.

They had been frightened when they saw Lü Lu collapse. How could they not have feelings? Yet ultimately, these feelings were overshadowed by their concern for face and need for money.

From Lü Lu’s childhood, her parents had been accustomed to her being sensible and excellent. After her incident, she had become much more ordinary after waking up.

Even now, they couldn’t have imagined that their daughter was about to die.

Lü Lu, however, was not moved by her mother’s rare gentleness. Though awake, her mind was still echoing with “your life span has ended”. The phrase seemed to occupy her entire thinking, suddenly creating a sense of total despair, as if all her inner connections to this world had been extracted.

Life span ended, might as well return.

As if this was never her place, and she was never meant to belong here.

Lu Lu discovered that her mother’s hand was holding hers, and suddenly felt a wave of disgust. She pushed her mother away, sat up from the sofa, and said expressionlessly: “You can all leave. I don’t want to see you anymore. Anyway, when I die, all the money here will be yours, so why the rush?”

Lu’s father heard these words and found them sarcastic. He was about to curse, but seeing his daughter’s calm and waveless face, he inexplicably felt a sudden sense of unease, and the words he was about to say remained unsaid.

Lu Lu said wearily: “Just go. I’m a bit tired today, can you just leave me alone… okay?”

Her last “okay” suddenly raised in pitch, startling the Lu couple. They exchanged a glance, both feeling an inexplicable sense of unease, but seeing Lu Lu was not in good condition, they had to leave.

Luo Yingbai did not leave, instead pouring a glass of water and placing it in front of Lu Lu.

Lu Lu didn’t bother to thank her, picked up the water glass and drank it all at once, feeling somewhat better.

She said: “Sorry for making you see this. Master Luo, please sit.”

Luo Yingbai sat down in front of her and asked: “No one has come to find you in the middle of the night recently, right?”

Lu Lu nodded: “Yes, thank you.”

Luo Yingbai said: “No need to be polite.”

They fell silent simultaneously. At this moment, Lu Lu was very grateful that Luo Yingbai did not ask her anything about what had just happened.

Lu Lu said: “When I passed out just now, I seemed to have a hallucination. Someone told me I was already dead.”

She looked at Luo Yingbai: “You don’t seem surprised at all?”

Luo Yingbai said: “Because I came for this matter. What that person said is right. In fact, your life should have ended over a year ago.”

Lu Lu felt touched by something but could not recall her cause of death, who she had seen before dying, or why she would die.

She murmured: “Is that so? But I’m sitting right in front of you.”

However, Lu Lu felt that she didn’t seem to be afraid or particularly shocked. Death seemed like just another thing, like extinguishing a lamp or closing a door. Even she was surprised by how quickly and naturally she accepted this fact.

Lu Lu asked: “Are those people carrying the sedan chair related to this matter?”

Seeing her level of acceptance, Luo Yingbai nodded and said: “Sorry, I cannot preserve your life, so I can only tell you what I know.”

He neither concealed nor embellished, and told Lu Lu the entire story from beginning to end. Lu Lu went from initial shock to gradually becoming calm.

Lu Lu said: “Oh, maybe my subconscious already knew this, just never been awakened. What do you want me to do now?”

Luo Yingbai said: “This question should be for me to ask. What do you want to do now? This body was created for you through magic and does not conform to worldly principles. If your soul does not leave before the body collapses, you will vanish with the body.”

Lu Lu blurted out: “No! I want revenge!”

Luo Yingbai: “Revenge?”

After saying those words, Lu Lu’s thoughts suddenly became clear. She said decisively: “Yes, revenge! I feel I was definitely killed by someone. I’m not reconciled. I want revenge!”

Luo Yingbai: “Do you know who your enemy is?”

Lu Lu tried hard to remember but looked bewildered and shook her head.

Her way of living was essentially erasing the turning point of death in her life, so not remembering was normal. Perhaps when she recovered her spirit state she might remember, or perhaps not.

With one leg bent, he knelt beside Luo Yingbai and, maintaining this suppressive posture, tilted his head to kiss Luo Yingbai’s neck side, speaking in a quite upright tone: “It’s okay if you don’t buy it for me.”

Luo Yingbai: “…Xianning, you’ve changed!”

Xia Xianning: “No.”

Luo Yingbai: “You used to be so proper, absolutely would never say such things!”

Xia Xianning responded with an “Oh”: “I was pretending before.”

After speaking, Xia Xianning was about to lean in again, but Luo Yingbai stopped him with a finger on his forehead, warning with a half-smile: “That’s enough. I’m here on serious business.”

Xia Xianning, held back, gazed at Luo Yingbai. He could almost see each of Luo Yingbai’s eyelashes touched by sunlight, the half-hidden smile seeming to set his heart ablaze.

Xia Xianning reluctantly released his hold, gently adjusting Luo Yingbai’s collar: “What serious business?”

Luo Yingbai: “I brought Lu Lu here to follow the procedure of separating her soul and sending her to the underworld. Otherwise, if I sent her back to her home, her parents would think I killed her.”

Xia Xianning nodded, remembering something else: “By the way, is Lu Lu’s help-seeking Weibo post still on your phone? Let me see.”

Chapter 112: The Pain of a Reverse CP

Luo Yingbai handed over his phone.

His task progress bar was full, but the red Weibo post was still hanging there, not showing any method to wake up Jiang Yujia.

Luo Yingbai: “I just heard Lu Lu talk about revenge and such. She seems to be saying she didn’t die by accident. I wonder if the Weibo’s silence is related to this.”
