The Enigma Squad

The young police officer shuffled to the wall and pressed his back tightly against it before saying, “It seems to be… an inexplicable heart failure.”

Xia Xianning and Lo Yingbai exchanged a glance. Lo Yingbai gently shook his head. While all these clues seemed strange when connected, each conclusion had been thoroughly investigated and had reliable witnesses. On the surface, the only reasonable explanation might be that Wen Qianqian had a weak constitution and died suddenly.

But was it really that simple?

The young police officer, seeing them silent, rolled his eyes and added, “Due to Lo Shao’s reminder, we’ve also interrogated Chang Weiyu. It turns out he was indeed the first to discover Wen Qianqian’s death. However, from the video, Chang Weiyu’s last statement seems true – he only stayed in the room for a few dozen seconds, which was not enough time to commit a crime.”

Lo Yingbai had a solid alibi. He was not being interrogated as a suspect, but as a witness providing clues. Given his special status, the police were very courteous to him. After interrogating Chang Weiyu, they had specially shown Lo Yingbai the transcript.

Lo Yingbai knew Xia Xianning was unfamiliar with the details, so he explained, “Chang Weiyu had previously gone to the rest room where Wen Qianqian died. She was already dead when he entered, so he was a suspect. But Chang Weiyu claims he was in and out in less than a minute, with no time to commit a crime.”

Xia Xianning said, “If it was less than a minute, it’s indeed unlikely to be him. But if there are blind spots in the door’s surveillance, it might be different. For example, he could have climbed in through the window.”

Lo Yingbai responded, “The hotel’s surveillance equipment is very comprehensive. I’ve checked several places, and a blind spot is highly unlikely. Chang Weiyu indeed entered for a very short time, and his facial expression was extremely panicked, which does align with his statement of ‘being so scared that he quickly left.'”

Xia Xianning listened to Lo Yingbai’s words and didn’t rush to comment. Instead, he asked, “Did the police station voluntarily tell you all this?”

Lo Yingbai said with a half-smile, “Yes. But whether Director Xia wants to buy this favor is up to you to decide.”

Xia Xianning glanced at the young police officer who had provided them with a lot of information and said coldly, “If you want to transfer this case to the Special Investigation Unit, have your team leader come and tell me personally.”

Lo Yingbai saw the young police officer’s surprised expression and couldn’t help laughing.

Wen Qianqian’s case was between a “supernatural case” and an “unsolved mystery” with unclear boundaries. Although it sounded bizarre, the police system’s various functional departments had clear divisions of labor. Without absolute evidence to determine that Wen Qianqian’s death was caused by unnatural causes, Xia Xianning would not approve transferring the case to the Special Investigation Unit.

As the investigation continued, the police officer found the case tricky. With Lo Yingbai, Director Xia’s senior, having some connection to the case, they were trying to pique Xia Xianning’s interest, hoping he would transfer the case to the Special Investigation Unit.

The young police officer was midway through his drumming when his intentions were seen through. Realizing the meaning of Xia Xianning’s words, he became extremely embarrassed. He repeatedly apologized, “Thank you, Director Xia, thank you, Lo Shao… I-I’ll go find my leader to receive you right away.”

Lo Yingbai said, “Mm, okay, no rush.

The young police officer jumped forward as if electrified. Laughing awkwardly, he ran away without looking back.

Xia Xianning said, “Cowardly, needs discipline.”

Lo Yingbai laughed, “Let it go, just a little scare.”

This matter is indeed strange, and he’s not having an easy time.”

Xia Xianning asked, “So in your view, could this be the work of supernatural beings?”

Lo Yingbai replied, “I can only say that looking solely at Wen Qianqian’s death, it doesn’t seem like it. I was at the scene, and her death was very quick. Supernatural interference would definitely leave traces. I conducted multiple yin energy tests and found no residue. That guy gets scared hearing the word ‘ghost’, but sometimes I think humans are far more terrifying…”

He paused, and Xia Xianning turned his head. They simultaneously asked, “Where is her husband?”

They remembered how during the village incident, Feng Zhengyang was anxiously worried about Wen Qianqian. They had witnessed his concern, which didn’t seem feigned. So now that a death had occurred, why hadn’t he appeared?

Was he dead, or was he the murderer?

Xia Xianning quickly said, “Send people to find Feng Zhengyang, quickly!”

Feng Zhengyang had not appeared for every program Wen Qianqian participated in. When he was brought to the Special Investigation Unit, he still carried an uncertain alcohol smell, squinting blearily and staggering while walking.

The police officer who brought Feng Zhengyang told Xia Xianning, “Director Xia, we found him in a hotel private room.”

Apparently, he had just finished a business meeting and has an alibi for the time of the incident. When Feng Zhengyang was discovered, he was with a male waiter in the hotel.

Luo Yingbai glanced at Feng Zhengyang and indeed saw that his clothes were in disarray, with a bit of underwear peeking out of his outer coat pocket. Earlier when the police arrested him, Feng Zhengyang and the male attendant were completely naked, and now he had hastily thrown on an outer coat to cover himself.

Unexpectedly, this man was omnisexual, and his marriage to Wen Qianqian was indeed strange.

Xia Xianning said, “You’ve worked hard.”

Feng Zhengyang was taken to the special investigation unit’s interrogation room. Luo Yingbai said, “Xianning, do you think he’s really acting? He seemed to have such deep feelings for Wen Qianqian. His wife’s body is barely cold, and he’s already out looking for someone else.”

Xia Xianning immediately said, “I’m not that kind of person.”

Luo Yingbai: “…”

Xia Xianning cleared his throat and said, “Guessing won’t help. Let’s wake up Feng Zhengyang and ask him.”

As they pushed open the door to the interrogation room, they saw Gou Songze half-bent, slapping Feng Zhengyang’s face, with Feng Zhengyang hugging his waist.

Luo Yingbai said, “Do you want ten minutes?”

Gou Songze: “…Scram.”

He had been entangled with the drunk and smelly Feng Zhengyang for half a day, originally being cautious because the other might not be a suspect and avoiding violent methods. But with Luo Yingbai’s teasing, Gou Songze angrily grabbed a nearby bottle of ice mineral water and poured it on Feng Zhengyang’s head, shouting, “Wake up!”

Shocked by the cold water, Feng Zhengyang immediately let go of Gou Songze’s waist and jumped up from the chair.

Gou Songze said, “Mr. Feng, are you awake now?”

Feng Zhengyang angrily said, “Who the hell are you? What are you doing!”

After saying this, he suddenly realized he was in a small, dark space with a police badge hanging on the opposite wall. Feng Zhengyang paused, then asked, “Where… is this place?”

Xia Xianning behind him said, “Mr. Feng, we meet again.”

Feng Zhengyang’s temper quickly subsided when he saw Xia Xianning, stammering, “Director Xia, and Young Master Luo, what… what is this about?”

Luo Yingbai pressed down on his shoulder, pushing him back into the chair: “This is the special investigation unit. Sorry to interrupt your date with your young boyfriend, but we have a few questions about your wife Wen Qianqian’s…”

“What did you say?!”
