The Enigma Squad

Their boss Xia Yanning did not disappoint, his cold voice chanting the incantation: “All laws return to one, infinite creates thought.” He pushed open the car door, drawing a circular arc in the air, and suddenly a Taiji diagram appeared in the dark night. Xia Yanning lightly shouted “Break”, and the invisible barrier was directly shattered, revealing the originally flawless night sky.

At this moment, the walkie-talkie suddenly transmitted a crisp female voice – Yue Ling reporting the situation: “Everyone, pay attention, I think I’ve spotted the target!”

With her words, the monitoring screen showed a massive ghost body, mouth wide open, pouncing in a certain direction. This was quite far from them. Xia Yanning’s eyes narrowed, his fingers forming a seal, about to act when he heard a light shout: “Infinite transformation, bind!” A silver lightning bolt from nearby locked onto the ghost body, instantly resolving the crisis.

A silence fell around them. After a moment, Yang Zheng asked: “Is it one of our own?” No one answered him. From the direction of the silver light, a figure was walking towards them. As the figure approached, Xia Yanning suddenly sat up straight.

Yue Ling pressed the microphone, lowering her voice: “Captain Xia, what should we do? Should we rush up or wait?”

After her words, the blurry figure gradually became clear. The person wore a black shirt, walking as if made of night itself, with ambiguous starlight falling on their body, revealing a thin and delicate silhouette. In the dark shadows, there was a beautiful stillness.

Only their face was backlit, making their facial features indistinguishable, but giving the impression that only an extremely exquisite face could match such a temperament. Cold and noble, quiet as moonlight. Who was this person? If judged by temperament, they would more resemble a vampire from Western legends.

“No… ” Gou Songze suddenly hesitated, his voice tinged with disbelief, “This, this can’t be… right?” Without warning, Xia Yanning suddenly pushed open the car door and jumped out. In his emotional turmoil, he forgot to restrain his magical power, and the magical artifacts on his body glowed brightly, causing nearby ghosts and monsters to retreat.

His colleagues were startled and hurried to follow, only to see Xia Yanning run forward and embrace the approaching person. However, Xia Yanning did not launch an attack. He just tightly hugged the person in his arms like a child who had obtained a treasure, cherishing it so much that he didn’t know how to show his love.

Everyone around was stunned. Throughout their time working together, they had never seen such a Xia Yanning before.

Chapter 11: Reunion After a Long Separation

Luo Yingbai didn’t expect that right after receiving some “welcome home package,” he would suddenly see a familiar person, and was dazed as Xia Yanning hugged him, breaking out in a cold sweat instantly.

He took several deep breaths to adjust his state of mind, and a smile returned to his face. He reached back to hug Xia Xianning in return, patting him on the back in a comforting manner.

Xia Xianning didn’t let go.

“I really didn’t expect him to be the one who came back,” Gou Songze said in a low voice after a moment of shock. “I wonder if I should remind them that there’s a large truck coming…”

“Hey—wait a moment, quick, let go, a vehicle is coming!”

Without his reminder, Luo Yingbai had already sensed the danger. He immediately pushed Xia Xianning away, and both of them jumped to the roadside. At the same time, the truck was driving towards a large puddle—

At the critical moment, Luo Yingbai was quick-witted. He flashed behind Xia Xianning, hugging his waist and hiding behind him, so only one of them who was supposed to share the difficulty became the one drenched.

“Splash—”

The truck passed, water spraying everywhere.

“This—”

Everyone watched, mouths agape.

The truck didn’t even stop, brazenly speeding away.

At this moment, only the two involved remained calm. Xia Xianning released his hand that had instinctively protected Luo Yingbai, and expressionlessly wiped the water droplets from his face.

Luo Yingbai turned around, and Yang Zheng finally saw his appearance clearly—sharp eyebrows and phoenix eyes, a high nose bridge, a slightly pointed chin.

This face looked very cold, but the shameless smile was too incongruous: “Oh, that was close! If I hadn’t reacted quickly, we would have been done for.”

Xia Xianning: “…Mm.”

As soon as the “Mm” left his mouth, a second truck came. This time, Xia Xianning was even faster, directly pulling the other person behind himself again, blocking another splash of mud and water.

No more trucks came. They walked to the roadside, and the air was somewhat quiet.

Xia Xianning stared at Luo Yingbai unblinkingly, a drop of water sliding down his forehead. He seemed to have forgotten or didn’t care to wipe it, his gaze still fixed on Luo Yingbai.

“He’s so damn annoying,” the water-soaked Xia Xianning thought expressionlessly. “Outrageous, always tricking me.”

He saw Luo Yingbai reach out to wipe the water droplet, and instinctively grabbed that hand, giving it a light squeeze before quickly letting go and wiping the droplet himself.

Never mind… he couldn’t do anything about him. At least he was back. Being back was enough.

As Xia Xianning thought this, the inherent cold aura around him seemed to soften. Luo Yingbai felt uncomfortable under his gaze and forced a laugh: “Xianning, you’re making me look like a bad guy.”

Luo Yingbai pinched and pulled his face: “Poor thing, you’re still as silly as before. I just tricked you.”

Xia Xianning, having his face pulled, said calmly: “So should I now take revenge and push you into the water?”

“Uh…”

Xia Xianning gave him a sidelong glance, leisurely rolling up his sleeves: “Thinking about it, that does sound fun.”

Just as the words fell, he was flicked on the forehead by Luo Yingbai: “Although I know you’ve always admired me, but dear cousin, do you really think I could pin down the Little Tiangang Star with just one move?”

Gou Songze thought about it and realized it made sense, but even if it was reasonable, he would never admit it if it came from Luo Yingbai’s mouth: “Who knows? There’s a saying that goes, ‘If you have no shame, you’re invincible.’ I think you’re pretty invincible.”

Luo Yingbai said nothing and turned to call out: “Xia Chu, your little brother is insulting me!”

Gou Songze: “…”

Xia Jianning glanced at him casually. Gou Songze coughed awkwardly and said: “…But because he’s not the Greedy Wolf Star Lord, my statement naturally doesn’t hold. That is, elder cousin, don’t you think his appearance is exactly the same as the Greedy Wolf Star Lord? Why is that?”

Luo Yingbai laughed: “Ask him.”

Gou Songze was stunned and followed Luo Yingbai’s gesture to look.

He saw Xia Jianning’s lips curve slightly, and with a flick of his finger, a purple light shot straight into the sky, reaching the clouds. The stars moved, the earth’s springs surged. As the Tianchu dimmed, a crack suddenly appeared at the bottom of the artificial lake beside them, and the lake water instantly dried up. The “Greedy Wolf Star Lord” nearby let out a miserable cry, his magnificent robes vanishing, turning into a dark mass.

A light pillar descended from the sky, and an angry rebuke came from its center: “Xia Jianning, you mere mortal, how dare you disturb the Seven Elements Heavenly Palace? What are you doing?”

Xia Jianning calmly replied: “Investigating a case, had to trouble you all, sorry.”
