The Enigma Squad

“Ten thousand laws return to one, infinite creates thought.”

In the dark night, a Taiji diagram suddenly appeared out of thin air. Xia Xianning softly commanded “go in”, and the Wuxie beast was directly forced into the center of the formation. At this moment, the person guarding the west was struggling to deal with two beasts simultaneously.

Chen Qin watched as Xia Xianning leaped up, using the wall nearby for leverage, spinning in the air and kicking a massive creature flying. Immediately after, he shook out a short knife and threw it with a “whoosh”, hitting the Wuxie beast directly between the eyebrows, killing it instantly.

Chen Qin was completely stunned, mumbling, “That’s so cool…”

He was distracted by Xia Xianning and only realized something was seriously wrong when the entire vehicle violently shook!

He trembled and turned his head, finding a face inches from the car window, two long fangs trying to stab inside, causing the glass to make a teeth-grinding “creak creak” sound.

In that instant, various training contents flashed through his mind and then disappeared like a meteor. Chen Qin acted decisively, collapsing into the seat and then sliding under the car—

Why are the Wuxie beasts coming from this direction, help me…

Chen Qin let out a barely audible scream, but unfortunately, no one could save him. The others were on the other side of the formation, the scene chaotic with demonic energy, completely unaware of his situation.

The Wuxie beast was about the size of a tiger but incredibly strong. As it was about to overturn the entire vehicle with its impact, stimulated by survival instinct, Chen Qin opened the car door with shaking hands and rolled out, covering his head.

Then the car flipped, about to crash down on him.

“Ah—”

Now even survival instinct was useless. Chen Qin almost forgot he had legs, struggling forward like swimming in the sea, almost feeling the wind and the beast’s roar behind him.

At that moment, a hand grabbed his collar, dragging him several meters away before releasing him.

Chen Qin collapsed on the ground like mud, drenched in sweat.

In the darkness, he couldn’t see the appearance of his rescuer, only catching a glimpse of a tall, slender silhouette. A young man’s clear voice rang out from above, with a gentle and soft tone: “No matter the situation, the most important thing is to remain calm and cautious; at least don’t expose your back—this is the first item in the on-the-job training manual, which you should have read.”

Chen Qin lowered his head in shame. At that moment, a beast’s roar sounded, and the person calmly turned around: “A Wuxie beast daring to be so presumptuous, even attacking a special investigation vehicle… wow, it’s dying! Oh, there are two!”

Chen Qin: “…”

Feeling like he’d discovered his companion was unreliable, he stammered, “So what do we do…”

“What else can we do!” Luo Mingbai, who had failed at showing off and was now panicking, dragged him up from the ground and started running, “Run!”

Chen Qin: “!!!” What happened to not exposing your back?!

He had no chance to voice his question, being dragged by Luo Mingbai in a mad dash, with two Wuxie beasts in hot pursuit.

Everything happened in the blink of an eye. Before the monster could even touch the ground, blood was dripping from its wound. Luo Mingbai rolled to dodge the blood rain, then suddenly turned and leaped up, swinging his curved knife to silently decapitate the Ju beast.

His technique was clean and efficient, utilizing everything around him to the extreme in the shortest time possible. Without any additional spell support, he successfully killed an ancient monster, leaving both himself and Chen Qin unharmed.

Chen Qin stood with his mouth agape, completely stunned.

There were two Ju beasts chasing them. After Luo Yingbai killed one, the other followed shortly after. Unperturbed, he stepped forward, positioning his foot on a specific spot, and drew an unusual pattern on the ground with his blood-stained knife.

“Dim can see, lame can walk, inner balance undisturbed, hidden person’s fortune is auspicious.”

Luo Yingbai thrust his knife into the Qian position and shouted, “Although the great formation guards the central gate, it must also protect the exterior. There are demons here – can’t you see?”

As if responding to his command, the formation suddenly came to life, sweeping in with golden light along the blood-colored symbol, instantly surrounding the other Ju beast.

Then, at the spot where the special investigation vehicle had overturned earlier, the ground suddenly collapsed, creating a deep pit. Chen Qin now understood why Luo Yingbai had been running away – he wasn’t avoiding the fierce beast, but had discovered something wrong with that area and didn’t want to activate the formation.

The two escaped.

Everyone gathered around, looking surprised at the pit, wondering what mystery might be hidden beneath.

Chapter 71: Luo Yingbai

Gou Songze said, “I smell a smoky scent. What is this place? It’s not on fire, is it?”

While speaking, he bent down to examine the pit’s surroundings. They quickly discovered that the large pit was blown open by magical force, due to the underground area being hollow, with the true entrance located near a nearby bush.

Lin Xing reported back, “There’s a narrow hole under the bush with a ladder. Should we go down?”

Luo Yingbai said, “Climbing a ladder is too troublesome. It’s easier to jump down directly.”

Luo Yingbai was most adept at these brain-testing things. He squatted down, gathering magical power in his hand, and said: “The inner layer is a sealing formation, the outer layer is an attack formation. To see what’s inside the shrine, we need to break through two layers of formations, which is a bit tricky. However, if we add something to the formation, we should be able to temporarily create a passage.”

Xia Xianning said: “The usual method?”

He meant that Luo Yingbai would temporarily maintain the modified formation, while he would go in to check the shrine.

This was always their division of labor, and Lo Yingbai had no objection, saying: “Mm, do you have paper? Give me a sheet.”

Xia Xianning agreed, taking out a notebook to give to Lo Yingbai. Halfway through, he suddenly remembered something and quickly pulled his hand back, tearing off a page and handing it over.

Lo Yingbai recalled the small notebook he had seen by his mother’s pillow and suddenly felt displeased with Xia Xianning’s action, saying with a half-smile: “Do you have some secret you don’t want me to see?”

Xia Xianning was annoyed at his momentary lapse in judgment as Lo Yingbai pulled the paper from his fingers.

He drew a series of symbols on it, and as his fingertips passed, the paper left a glowing trace. Then, with a wave of his finger, the paper turned to powder, but the powder didn’t fall, instead suspending quietly in mid-air.

Lo Yingbai pressed down on the powder, and the malevolent energy in the formation seemed to lighten slightly.

Lo Yingbai said: “Go quickly.”

Xia Xianning stepped into the formation. Others watched nervously, but he was unhesitating, walking straight to the shrine and striking it with his palm, splitting the entire shrine in two. Only then did he see that what was enshrined was not a divine statue, but actually a Buddha amulet.

Xia Xianning didn’t dare to delay, wrapping the amulet in talisman paper and quickly putting it in his pocket before retreating from the formation.

As everything seemed to end peacefully, everyone who had been holding their breath relaxed.

Gou Songze said: “There’s actually a Buddha amulet in the shrine, but how could a genuine amulet have such evil energy?”

Xia Xianning, who had the clearest view, said: “It’s not genuine, it’s a yin amulet.”
