The Trials of Rebirth

Following the path I entered the pear garden, I found the road endless, pear trees growing taller. Whether looking up or forward, it was an endless path that made one’s heart sink into an abyss and head spin. I bit my lip; my obstacle-clearing spell was completely useless. Although my skills were lacking, I was still an immortal. Being trapped like this was frustrating. I’d conserve my energy and report to the Supreme God when I returned.

I tumbled out of bed, my legs going weak, almost collapsing on the floor. The result of being overconfident was forgetting that my heart still had a huge hole!

Covering my heart as I walked out, seeing the corridor that had not a single person or ghost, I got a headache.

The corridor was winding and complex, just like when I first arrived. It looked familiar, but as I walked, it transformed into another shape. Mu Chen cast a spell, and now it seems that was indeed the case, and certainly not something a second-rate immortal like me could break, especially while injured.

The bloody smell grew stronger, overwhelming my nose.

I looked down at my right hand; my fingers were already stained red, blood seeping between my fingers, shocking to the eye.

A wind swept behind me, and I heard Mu Chen’s voice, half angry and half mocking: “Do you really not want to stay here?”

Who would want to stay here. I thought silently, and conveniently passed out to avoid hearing his reproach.

When I woke up again, Mu Chen was not beside me, and there was no one else in the room. I moved my hand; well, I was still alive.

I slowly got out of bed, not yet wearing shoes, and heard Mu Chen’s footsteps outside. I quickly pulled back my foot, and before he could walk around the screen, I pulled the blanket over myself and pretended to be asleep.

The bed slightly sank, and I felt someone sit nearby. The voice was a woman’s, surprised: “She, she’s still alive?”

“Speak softly. Just focus on treating her wounds.”

“Yes…”

Slightly reluctant, but still lifting my clothing: “My Lord, will you use true qi to heal her? Now that your form is unstable, using true qi to sustain life…”

Mu Chen’s tone immediately turned cold: “Say one more word and I’ll kill you.”

The female voice paused, utterly helpless: “She betrayed you, yet you don’t resent her at all.”

A fierce slap fell, and the bed lightened – she was probably slapped to the ground by Mu Chen.

My heart skipped a beat; I’ll continue pretending to sleep, keep on pretending.

“I don’t resent her? I wish I could kill her!”

The female voice suddenly grew loud: “Then why do you keep saving her? If you hadn’t gone to save her, you wouldn’t have fallen into the Bone River, wouldn’t have gone blind, wouldn’t be a disabled wreck!”

She was shouting so loudly that even a deaf person would wake up. I slowly opened my eyes, looking at them innocently. She was very beautiful, with round eyes showing an incredibly determined expression. Her face still bore five finger marks. I felt slightly guilty looking at her, but she turned away defiantly.

Mu Chen bent down, grabbed her hair, and dragged her out.

She screamed: “You can’t kill me! You promised me you’d never kill me! Would a realm lord go back on his word to a small peony flower?”

Mu Chen said grimly: “I won’t kill you, but I’ll chop off your limbs and let you suffer in the ghost forest, worse than death!”

I looked at him in shock, hesitating before reaching out to grab his wrist, my pleading voice trembling: “Let her go…”

The peony flower looked at me with hatred, staring uncomfortably.

Mu Chen’s hand suddenly loosened, and he kicked her: “Get out.”

The peony flower covered her stomach, her face pale, and retreated. I sighed in relief, quickly letting go of his hand. This movement made my wound throb, almost making me pass out.

Mu Chen reached out: “I’ll have Qing Yuan find you a physician.”

Hearing Qing Yuan’s name, I perked up: “I want to see Qing Yuan.”

Mu Chen said flatly: “Okay.”

I was overjoyed.

“First, heal your wounds.”

I wilted.

Tucked back into bed, hearing his departing footsteps, I pressed my hand on my chest, causing cold sweat to pour from the pain. I transformed the overflowing blood into tiny blood people, infused with immortal qi, and said: “Quickly return to the divine realm and seek help, find someone to rescue me.”

Dozens of blood people fell to the ground, seeping into it. I closed my eyes again. Blood people formed from heart’s blood are more powerful; perhaps they could successfully escape this orchard.

What an unlucky year. Could this be the legendary personal fate year?

This sleep was still restless. When I woke up, Mu Chen was sitting nearby. There was no lamp in the room, and seeing his barely visible figure startled me.

“Awake?”

As always, with his arrogant tone and uncompromising attitude, I mumbled: “Mm.”

Returning to the room, the bed was already made. As Mu Chen laid me down and covered me with soft padding, I felt a bad premonition.

That Su Su had lived with him and might have had intimate relations, but I’m not Su Su! If he turns out to be a beast, should I castrate him or… castrate him?!

In fact, I worried unnecessarily. He lay on one side, said “Sleep,” and truly fell asleep.

Seeing he seemed deeply asleep, I carefully prepared to turn and escape under the cover of night. Just as I moved one foot, he grabbed my wrist. His eyes gleamed in the moonlight, making my spine chill. I stammered: “I, I want to use the toilet…”

Mu Chen pressed his thin lips. I pulled back my foot and said seriously: “I don’t want to go now.”

After a moment, while I was still plotting, he suddenly spoke: “I will slowly help you remember what happened before.”

I paused: “I’m fine now.”

He didn’t let go of my hand and turned to face me: “Why?”

Every time I try to recall past events, I get a headache. It’s better to forget them completely.

If someone said I look like Shu Shu, I would absolutely not believe it, but when you add up the voice, Ya Ya, the thousand-year-old memory loss, I can no longer find an excuse to refute these facts.

I am Shu Shu, but I don’t want to recover my previous memories.

If my past self chose to forget those things, why should I hurt myself now?

Mu Chen’s voice was slightly heavy, and his palm was already seeping with fine sweat: “If I tell you about the events from a thousand years ago, would you not want to listen?”

“No!”

“Don’t want to remember?”

“Don’t want to!”

Since I know it will be painful, let it disappear completely.

After another long silence, even the silver-white moonlight seemed to freeze, pressing down on me so I could barely breathe. Mu Chen leaned his body towards me, forcefully embracing me in his arms, and said in a low voice: “It’s good that you don’t remember. Let’s start over.”

“Start over…” I murmured, “Can we really start over? How can a god and a ghost be together?”

I tried to push him away; no matter how deeply in love we might have been before, now he is completely strange to me.

“There is still the human world in the three realms.”

I was stunned, suddenly remembering what Mu Yin said – that we had once lived in the human world. But why did we later separate?

I wanted to ask so many things, but knowing too much would only be a burden. I couldn’t push him away, and the wound in my heart was still aching. I closed my eyes and fell into that entangled dream.

When I woke up in the morning, Mu Chen was not beside me. Washing items had been prepared in the room.

I held the still-warm water and splashed it on my face, feeling much more awake. Sitting in front of the dressing table and combing my hair, my face seemed a bit thinner.

A twitch crossed my face, and I laughed again. If only I could be as carefree as Ya Ya. Sighing, I prepared to go out for a walk. Since I can’t escape, I might as well enjoy it.
