The Undead

Zhou Rong pulled Si Nan through the crowd. Outside the base, hundreds of torches blazed, brightening the night, with civilians passing torches and ammunition upward, while self-defense squad members shot down zombies climbing up the iron mesh.

A steady female voice rang out: “Too many! Shooting squad, temporarily retreat!”

Chen Yajing had pushed herself to the frontline, watching the zombie masses, shouting forcefully: “Activate the electric grid!”

The shooting squad ran backward. Wan Biao, sweating profusely, staggered toward the duty room, biting a flashlight as he opened the electrical box and pulled down the switch.

Buzz—

Electricity flashed across the iron mesh surrounding the defensive works, with countless sparks erupting. The first few rows of zombies were instantly charred!

The electric current crackled, dropping rows of zombies, with a strong burnt smell rising to the sky!

“C3 sector requesting support.” An anxious voice came through the short-wave radio: “Zombies are piling up and rushing this way, requesting support!”

Chen Yajing, seeing Zhou Rong, nodded briefly before shouting into the radio: “Open the missile storage!”

All machine gunners, get into position!!”

The zombies that had suffered secondary death were now piling up at an angle around the defensive works, with subsequent zombies trampling their fallen comrades to climb up. The machine gunners fought to the death, firing madly, but the zombie numbers were too great. Amidst the hail of bullets, they climbed through the tower windows, with countless withered hands grabbing machine gunners and tearing them to pieces!

Blood exploded among the screaming crowd. Zhou Rong breathed heavily, suddenly striding forward: “Give me the gun! Fall back!”

Wan Biao let out a furious roar, carrying an assault rifle toward the zombie horde, when an iron-like grip seized his shoulder. Turning back, he saw Si Nan’s cold face in the firelight, saying: “Give it to me.”

Before Wan Biao could finish his sentence, his rifle was somehow already in Si Nan’s hands.

Si Nan was not muscular, even somewhat thin. On this cold winter night, wearing only a light jacket, he raised the machine gun and walked toward the zombies climbing the fortification.

Bang! Bang! Bang Bang!

Each precise shot was accompanied by a zombie head exploding, collapsing.

Si Nan stopped, standing beside Zhou Rong, switching the assault rifle to automatic mode with a click.

Before them was an endless tide of the undead and the pitch-black night beyond; behind them, a crowd screaming in terror and torches burning half the night sky.

They exchanged a glance. Zhou Rong smiled and asked, “I have 2,600 rounds. How about you?”

“2,200,” Si Nan narrowed his eyes at the scope, softly saying: “But that’s enough to beat you… Alpha.”

Zhou Rong responded with a provocative laugh. They bumped fists casually, backs touching, and fired simultaneously!

Special forces snipers trained with hundreds of thousands of rounds far surpassed civilian shooting squads in speed, precision, and ammunition efficiency. Zombies that previously required seven or eight bullets now fell with almost every shot, sometimes multiple zombies per bullet, instantly spraying brain matter everywhere!

Zhou Rong and Si Nan, with their high-powered suppression, steadily advanced into the zombie horde. Their two heavy machine guns blazed with dazzling sparks, forcing the zombie sea to retreat!

“Missiles! Incendiary rounds! Continued fire support, quick! Armored vehicles, prepare to deploy!” Chen Yajing shouted the order before throwing down the radio and raising a megaphone, standing at the forefront of the fortification: “All units, advance! Machine gunners cannot retreat!!”

“Behind you is your base! Your home! Your wives and children!!”

“For those who fall,” she paused, her voice dropping low, echoing across the entire battlefield: “The base will support your families and raise your children.”

The machine gunners’ eyes reddened, resolute, following Zhou Rong and Si Nan, firing madly into the zombie horde.

Women and children rushed from the camp, helping to pass bullets and explosives, forming a human transport chain amidst intertwining firelight. Men grabbed burning alcohol bottles, charged the fortifications, and recklessly threw them into waves of surging zombies.

Explosions erupted one after another, shaking the earth.

The zombie horde roared, spreading through the night sky amid blood and fire.

Minutes later, the zombies climbing the defensive works were completely cleared, corpses lying everywhere, blood and flesh fused together.

The machine gunners seemed to have killed their way out of the corpse tide, collapsing and crying tears of joy, falling to their knees on the wall.

On the vast mountain slope below them, explosive packages rained down on the zombie horde; the zombie tide surrounding the barbed wire finally began to thin, clearing several meters of space.

“Open the gate!” Chen Yajing’s voice echoed across the battlefield: “Armored vehicles, move out!”

A thunderous roar grew closer, as Chun Cao and Ding Shi each drove a modified armored vehicle, bursting through the iron gate pulled open by everyone, crushing toward the nearby zombies.

Yan Hao patted the vehicle’s heavy machine gun, laughing loudly: “Aren’t you coming down! I’ll cover you!”

Sinan raised an eyebrow, took two steps back for a running start, and in everyone’s shocked cries, leaped down from seven or eight meters high on the defensive works, rolling on landing and kneeling to aim the machine gun.

Zhou Rong roared: “Vice Captain, want to get screwed? Trying to steal my spot right in front of me?!” Then jumped down after him.

Zombies on the ground, attracted by human presence, gathered and surged up the slope, immediately struck head-on by the armored vehicles with modified ramming angles, their tracks crushing a path of rotting flesh.

Zhou Rong landed and stood, again firing simultaneously with Sinan. They were like two human artillery platforms, their extremely high firing rate sending bullets flying into the chamber like dancing giant pythons, advancing step by step under the cover of the vehicle-mounted heavy machine guns.

“Weren’t you going to take me out?” Zhou Rong teased amid flying shell casings.

Sinan carelessly responded: “Taking you out is easy.”

“…Little Sinan.”

“Hmm?”

Sinan’s eyes swept from behind the sight, meeting Zhou Rong’s gaze, the latter’s mouth curving with a hint of wickedness.

Bang!

The bullet accurately exploded the gasoline grenade thrown by Chun Cao across the night sky.

Burning metal fragments drew hundreds of fire arcs, instantly slicing into countless zombie heads!

Sinan narrowed his pupils, coldly sizing up Zhou Rong for seconds, then with a click, switched the machine gun to single-shot mode.

In the distance, Zhou Rong and Si Nan almost simultaneously fired, and the gasoline bombs precisely exploded in the night sky, bursting into countless deadly fireworks.

Yan Hao’s last thread of rationality snapped, turning the machine gun towards Guo Weixiang, said with grief and indignation: “I told you to stop talking—!”

Ding Shi hurriedly turned the steering wheel, driving away with Guo Weixiang on the roof.

Countless homemade explosive packages were again thrown from the fortifications, falling towards the zombie horde in the dark sky, then struck by bullets, erupting into earth-shattering consecutive explosions.

Zhou Rong released the trigger: “27/27.”

“36/36…” Si Nan glanced sideways through the sight, softly saying: “Different gun types, I won’t take advantage of you.”

Just as Zhou Rong was about to tease him, more explosive packages suddenly fell, and both raised their guns to shoot.
