Seeing Lan Lingling’s hand reaching toward them, the children fled at the boy’s command, filling the surroundings with laughter.
Sunlight filtered through the trees, reflecting on the children.
“Miss, what are you thinking?” Joyer asked softly as she approached Lan Lingling, who was sitting on the steps.
“Nothing! Are the children asleep?” Lan Lingling smiled and lay back, lost in thought.
“They just fell asleep. They wanted to find you earlier, but I told them if they didn’t sleep well, Sister Lingling would be unhappy tomorrow! So they obeyed. Miss, what’s wrong? Are you thinking about your mother? I miss mine too!” Joyer’s tears fell, the moonlight enhancing her sorrow.
“Joyer, are you an orphan too?” Lan Lingling asked, recalling when she first bought Joyer; her parents were still alive.
“Yes,” Joyer nodded, her expression downcast.
“But didn’t you have parents? Who sold you to me?” Lan Lingling wondered if they were traffickers.
“They were my adoptive parents. I was born without a family, and my neighbor, following my mother’s last wish, handed me over to a childless family—my adoptive parents.”
Later, because the family was too poor, they had to sell me. But I was lucky to meet you; otherwise, I might have been sold to a brothel!” Joyer smiled faintly, clutching her embroidered handkerchief.
“So you’re an orphan too! How about we create an orphanage for ourselves?” Lan Lingling asked, holding Joyer’s hand. This was the dean’s dream, and she was determined to fulfill it, even in ancient times.
“You, are you human or ghost? If you’re human, make a sound; if you’re a ghost, leave! This is a human place. Otherwise, don’t blame me for splashing dog’s blood on you! How can someone come out at night to scare people?”
“What do you say!” The person coldly laughed again, and before Lan Ling’er could blink, he suddenly appeared right in front of her.
Oh my god! So scary! Lan Ling’er covered her heart, breathing heavily. How could he be so fast? Could he have some grievance he wants me to help him redress? But why me!
Lan Ling’er rolled her eyes, not daring to look at his feet that seemed not to touch the ground.
“Hey!”
