That evening, she went to the cafeteria wearing a mask, thoroughly covering her face, leaving only her eyes exposed.
By the time she arrived, dinner was already being served. People from zones five and six were eating, and the moment they saw her outfit, their attention was instantly focused on her. Tao Yu’s lips twitched, knowing this would happen.
“What are you looking at? Eat!” she said impatiently.
With her words, those who had been relying on her to gather intelligence about the enemy immediately lowered their heads. The chubby guy looked at Yue Linze’s mouth injury with a complex expression, thinking “no way.”
Just as he had this thought, Li Xun laughed: “Officer, why are you wearing a mask today? You didn’t get bitten on the mouth like Yue Linze, did you?”
Yue Linze glanced at him lazily and continued eating, as if he hadn’t heard his name.
Tao Yu’s mouth twitched. Before she could speak, the chubby guy was already angry: “What nonsense are you talking about? My boss accidentally bit himself!”
“I didn’t say anything,” Li Xun immediately retorted.
The chubby guy was about to argue, but a faint glance from Yue Linze silenced him. He was anxious – if the boss’s affair with the officer was exposed, how would these guys mock him later?
“Enough. I’m just catching a cold. Stop guessing. We have rehearsal tomorrow, aren’t you nervous?” Tao Yu glared at Li Xun, who immediately remembered the performance and dared not say more.
The previously silent Skinny Monkey smiled: “Right, the officer has been sick these days. Probably not serious before, so she didn’t wear a mask. Don’t spread rumors.”
Tao Yu appreciated someone speaking up for her and nodded at Skinny Monkey. Her gesture fell into Yue Linze’s eyes, who coldly lowered his gaze.
“Exactly! Li Xun, how can you talk like that? Our officer is so upright, dedicating herself to us to the point of death. How dare you mock her, ptui!” the chubby guy immediately chimed in.
Li Xun felt caught in the middle, muttering “Just joking” and then staying silent.
Tao Yu knew she had gotten through this moment.
Until dinner ended, no one mentioned her mask again, and Yue Linze never looked at or spoke to her.
