Cruel Heart

The beam of my flashlight revealed Liang Yingwu’s extremely bizarre posture. My heart skipped a beat; what was he doing? Liang Yingwu was inching along the right side of the corridor, not walking but crawling, and he wasn’t using his flashlight. My flashlight beam illuminated the path ahead of him, yet he showed no reaction, continuing to move forward in a slow, stiff manner, like someone sleepwalking. I was shocked and hurried after him. Upon closer inspection, I saw his hand was pressed against the wall, using it to guide his way like a blind man. Without much thought, I slapped his shoulder and whispered sharply, “Liang Yingwu!” He shuddered and turned around; the flashlight beam on his face showed nothing unusual. Liang Yingwu pushed my flashlight away, scolding, “Why are you scaring people like that?” “What are you scaring people for? What were you doing just now?” I retorted. “I was trying to eliminate visual interference,” he explained. “Visual interference?” I didn’t understand. Liang Yingwu then stepped back out of the corridor, and I followed. It wasn’t just us awake; my whisper, though not loud, had evidently been heard by others. A student, Lu Yun, crawled over from our designated living area, hesitated at the edge, then decided to come over to see what was happening. Bian Xiaowei, however, still showed no response. “What’s going on?” Lu Yun asked softly. Liang Yingwu signaled me to turn off my flashlight and said, “I’m trying to figure out how to get out.” He paused, then asked me, “Na Duo, why do you think we can’t get out?”

This was the most perplexing issue. After organizing my thoughts, I cautiously said, “This is the most baffling part. A relatively reasonable explanation might be that there’s a spatial refraction point somewhere in the corridor, like a mirror that refracts light. Once we pass through this mirror, we start retracing our steps, eventually returning to where we started. But this is just my imagination; there’s no evidence to support it. I’ve heard that nature sometimes creates areas where space-time bends, where there are teleportation points that send people or animals to another location. However, our situation can’t be explained by simple teleportation because our movement felt seamless, with no sensation of being transported. To imagine a scenario where teleportation occurs without the subject’s awareness is beyond my imagination, so I’ve concocted this theory of a space-reflecting mirror.”
