Future Phone – Part One

“You…” Zhang Hui was somewhat confused by Hao Yunyang’s sudden entrance. In the hotel with around 150 people, they didn’t usually have much interaction, except for meeting during resignation settlement and monthly salary distribution. Zhang Hui was not a genius, so she couldn’t remember Hao Yunyang, whom she had only met once or twice. However, Hao Yunyang’s attitude was good, always calling her “sister” in a way that made her feel comfortable, and she didn’t show much displeasure at his sudden intrusion.

“Hehe, Sister Hui, you really are forgetful. I’m Xiao Hao, the one who accidentally spilled mop water on your shoes in the lobby that day.” Hao Yunyang’s smile never faded, though it contained over 90% artificiality, it didn’t make people feel uncomfortable or strange, because he smiled so naturally, as if it were flowing from the bottom of his heart.

“Oh, so it’s you!” Zhang Hui realized, Hao Yunyang’s reminder made it easier to recall. Although the shoes he had stained that day were worth over 300 yuan, Hao Yunyang’s attitude and behavior were quite satisfactory to Zhang Hui, and she didn’t dwell on the matter. Besides, it had been almost a month, and no one would hold a grudge over such a small issue. Zhang Hui smiled and said, “It’s not time to collect wages yet. Come back after you get off work in the evening.”

“I have something urgent.” For this accountant who was a relative of the boss’s extended family, Hao Yunyang really needed to find a way to get on good terms with her. This was a subconscious manifestation because Hao Yunyang didn’t have much of a plan, or rather, at his current stage and position, he hadn’t yet reached the level of deliberately cultivating relationships. Hao Yunyang remembered a book he had read with a line that resonated deeply with him: One day you’ll discover that the connections you’ve made will be the most valuable asset of your life.

Modern society emphasizes efficiency and even more so, personal connections. A mediocre person who knows everyone will ultimately be more successful than a closed-off genius, provided that genius is not a scientist, as scientific contributions cannot be easily dismissed.
