That afternoon, they sat quietly in the villa’s small screening room, holding hands. When California sank on the big screen, Jiang Xingyao turned to him, her gaze fixed. Jiang Xiangyang gently stroked her hair. “What’s wrong, Xingyao?”
A tear slid down her pale face as she touched his face with her hand. “Xiangyang, if the world truly comes to an end, will you always be with me?”
After a moment of silence, he wiped away her tear and embraced her. “Xingyao, stop overthinking. In this lifetime, I’ll always be by your side. Since childhood, you’ve been good to me, and I remember everything you’ve done.”
His words only made her cry harder. “Xingyao, what’s wrong?” he asked, pulling out tissues to wipe her tears.
“Are you with me out of pity?” she choked out.
Jiang Xiangyang turned to face him directly, looking into his eyes. “Xingyao, I won’t allow you to overthink. Your body hasn’t fully recovered. How about this – I’ll have Sanbao prepare, and we’ll get engaged in ten days. Once you’re fully recovered, we’ll get married, okay? Then we’ll honeymoon in the Maldives.”
Jiang Xingyao buried her head in his chest and nodded. She had nothing left to lose and couldn’t afford to lose Jiang Xiangyang. Even if she knew he had something on his mind, she saw through his forced happiness.
They stopped talking. In the final scenes of 2012, amidst collapsing mountains and destruction, Jiang Xiangyang couldn’t understand the meaning of the survivors on Noah’s ark.
