Lone Hawk

“Jing Xin, tell me a place, and I’ll have the driver pick you up. Ji Xuan’s condition has worsened. This afternoon, he learned that a girl died, causing him to reject treatment and determine to die. He has a good impression of you; maybe you can persuade him.”

Jing Xin listened to Gao Zhanhong’s exhausted voice. An elderly man faced with such devastation—his almost disabled son and another estranged—must be suffering deeply. Even if Jiang Xiangyang no longer wanted her, Jing Xin felt she should help if she could.

“Uncle, I’m in the car now. You don’t need to send one. I’ll take a taxi. Please don’t worry.”

After hanging up, Jing Xin said softly, “Xiangyang, I have an urgent matter. Please let me get off.”

Jiang Xiangyang glanced at her, and Jing Xin, feeling guilty, quickly avoided his gaze.

“Where are you going? I’ll take you,” he said casually.

“No need. Let me off by the roadside. I’ll take a taxi,” Jing Xin hurriedly refused.

“I’ll take you. Give me the address,” he frowned, displeasure evident in his tone.

His determined tone left no room for negotiation, tightening Jing Xin’s heart and making her inexplicably nervous.

“Really, it’s not necessary. It’s very far.”

“Give me the address,” he said curtly, with a commanding tone.

Jing Xin was silent for a moment before finally telling him the address. Though they were no longer together, she felt she had done nothing wrong by approaching the Gao family for him.

Suddenly thrown to one side by a force, she steadied herself as the car stopped by the roadside. Jiang Xiangyang’s piercing gaze met hers. “Why are you going there?” he asked, suppressing his anger.

“Because of Ji Xuan. Your brother’s condition suddenly worsened. Uncle Gao hopes I can persuade him.” Under his intense gaze, her words became flustered and incoherent.

“I have nothing to do with them. I won’t allow you to see them,” he declared, wrapping his arm around her and pulling her close.
