“Are you feeling uncomfortable?” He repeated this question often.
Ru Feng usually answered she was fine, but today, she didn’t respond for a long time.
“Feng’er?” Qi Feng’s heart raced with worry.
Finally, Ru Feng reacted, staring blankly at him, tears falling.
Qi Feng, scared, said, “Don’t cry. Tell me what’s wrong. Does it hurt? Where? We’ll go to the hospital.” He began getting dressed.
Ru Feng grabbed him, “No, Second Brother, I feel him moving.”
“Moving? Who’s moving?” Qi Feng was confused.
Ru Feng pulled his hand to her belly, “Feel, he’s moving again.”
Indeed, there were subtle movements under his palm.
The soon-to-be father grew anxious, “Feng’er, what is our son doing? Is he uncomfortable? Wait, no, is he hurting you?”
Before Ru Feng could reply, Qi Feng propped himself up on the bed and leaped to the other side, “Feng’er, I read about this in a book. Let me check again.”
Months later, Ru Feng was pushed into the delivery room.
“Feng’er, the books say it’s very painful. If it hurts, squeeze my hand or bite me. Okay? One hand to bite, one to squeeze.”
“…”
“Feng’er, why aren’t you biting?”
Ru Feng gritted her teeth, “There’s no pain right now. Why did you have me pushed in?”
Qi Feng looked up. The doctors and nurses wore innocent yet careful expressions. He coughed, “Didn’t you say you dreamed about giving birth?”
“You said I was just dreaming! A dream, do you understand what a dream is?”
Qi Feng laughed awkwardly, feeling helpless. The due date had arrived, and he was on edge.
Before being pushed out, Ru Feng suddenly hugged her belly and frowned.
Qi Feng noticed her change and stopped, “Feng’er?”
Ru Feng looked pale, “I think this time it’s real.”
“Doctor, quick!” What followed was chaos.
Seeing Feng’er in pain made Qi Feng’s heart ache. Even when Ru Feng’s nails dug into his flesh, he felt nothing.
The delivery room was hot, and wearing sterile clothing made him feel constrained.
“Ah! It hurts so much!” Ru Feng tightened her grip and called out.
Qi Feng panicked, looking up at the doctor, “Doctor, we won’t give birth, don’t let her give birth.”
Ru Feng suddenly bit his hand, shouting hoarsely, “Situ Qi Feng, shut up!”
“Feng’er,” he bent down to comfort her, “If we don’t give birth, it won’t hurt.”
Second brother, don’t you know medical skills? If not, don’t you have common sense?
Can a child just stop being born at will? Ru Feng was surprised she still had the energy to think and shouted, “Shut up!”
Qi Feng was startled by her shout and fell silent, though sweat continued to pour down his body.
A fierce, tearing pain came, and Ru Feng clenched her fist, exhausted from the torment, then a loud cry rang out.
The midwife carried out the child, “Congratulations, it’s a chubby boy.”
Qi Feng stared blankly at the bloody mass, motionless for a long time.
“Sir?”
With a “thud,” Qi Feng collapsed.
“Someone come quickly, someone has fainted!”
Ru Feng lay weakly on the bed, thinking she should be the one fainting. Why was he fainting?
“Bring my son for me to see!” she said.
And so, this family was completely turned upside down.
Five years later, Situ Nian woke up from a dream looking at the woman beside him, “Mom, I’ve told you many times, I’m not in pain, not at all. If you could stop disturbing me at night, I would sleep very well!”
“Son, are you really not in pain, not hot, not uncomfortable at all?”
“Not in pain, not hot, not uncomfortable, but every time I’m woken up, I’m getting dark circles.”
Five years, and this conversation repeated every night.
Situ Nian didn’t understand why his mother believed he would wake up due to pain, heat, or discomfort. His health was impeccable, rarely catching colds. The last time was when his father threw him into a cold pool to build immunity.
Ru Feng sighed and hugged him tightly, saying, “No pain is good, Nian’er, be good and sleep.” Situ Nian snuggled into her embrace, feeling warm and cozy, but with a condition.
The door opened silently as a man entered, grabbing Nian and tossing him aside before picking up Ru Feng. “I’ve told you, he’s fine. You’re my wife, not his.”
“I’m his mother!” Ru Feng replied, nervously checking on Situ Nian. “Nian’er is only five; what if you hurt him?”
“Don’t worry, he’s tough!”
Situ Nian sighed in darkness, thinking he loved his mother’s embrace, as long as after his father stole it, he wouldn’t try to reclaim it.
The next day, during his martial arts practice, the intensity increased significantly.
“Dad, am I really your biological son?” he asked while dodging.
“Dare to let someone else be your dad?”
A chilling wind surged and Situ Nian closed his eyes, fearing for his safety.
“Situ Qi Feng, if you dare hit my son, I’ll fight you!” Ru Feng exclaimed upon witnessing her son being bullied.
Both men were stunned. Qi Feng was caught off guard, while Situ Nian was immediately pulled over and hugged tightly. “Come, son, let’s watch TV,” Ru Feng said soothingly.
After a moment, Qi Feng rubbed his head and entered the room. “What did you just say? You’ll fight me?”
Ru Feng shot him a glare. “Dare to hit my son again and see what happens!”
Qi Feng walked away but returned shortly, “Now I know, in your heart, I’m not even a tenth of your precious son. You hit me so hard, my head is still buzzing.”
Ru Feng continued to embrace Situ Nian, “We’ll ignore him.”
Situ Nian looked at Qi Feng with sympathy for his dad.
Eventually, Ru Feng set Situ Nian down and noticed Qi Feng sitting on the other side of the sofa, looking dejected. She pondered for a moment, then poured him a glass of water. “Second brother, does it really hurt?”
“Hmph!” Qi Feng responded, feeling neglected now that they had a son.
Ru Feng signaled to Situ Nian, “Son, go!”
Situ Nian climbed onto Qi Feng’s knee, saying, “Good, dad doesn’t hurt, Nian’er will blow on it!” Ru Feng laughed. Qi Feng, barely holding back his own laughter, replied, “Brat, do you think I’m like you?”
Situ Nian hugged Qi Feng’s neck and kissed him loudly on the face, then did the same to Ru Feng. “I’m not a brat, I’m just like Dad, the man Mommy loves most, right, Mommy?” Ru Feng nodded, smiling radiantly.
Qi Feng hugged his son tightly while holding Ru Feng’s hand. He once thought he would be lost in darkness, never understanding joy and sorrow, but she awakened him from nightmares, showing him a colorful world. He believed she would be with another man, watching from afar while sincerely blessing them, thinking he would walk alone.
He once thought he lost her forever, willing to endure pain to see her reborn. But miracles exist, and she returned to him. Now, with his wife and child in his arms, he smiled contentedly, “I have a family. I finally have warmth!”
“Dad, you’re hugging me so tight I can’t breathe!” came a small protest.
“Situ Qi Feng, you’re bullying us again, relax a bit. Son, fight back!”
“Okay, Mommy! Ah, Dad, Mommy’s neck is turning red.”
Situ Nian jumped far away, tilting his head triumphantly and laughing; this trick always works on Dad.
“Situ Nian, are you trying to trick me?” An angry voice.
“Why are you being so fierce with our son?” a woman’s voice replied.
The man snorted and sat back, looking aggrieved.
“Situ Nian, how dare you lie? Go write ‘I will never lie again’ a hundred times,” Situ Nian’s laugh collapsed, and he walked back dejected, saying softly, “Yes, Mommy.”
After handling both the big and small men, Ru Feng sat back on the sofa feeling refreshed. “Second Brother, pour me some water; I’m thirsty from talking too much.”
Sunlight poured in, the room turning golden—that was the color of happiness.
In this world, as long as one lives, miracles can happen.
