Yu Yi noticed that Nelson did not mention her and Meng Qing’s kiss at all, which slightly reduced her embarrassment.
That night was peaceful. At five in the morning, Yu Yi got up and let Meng Qing rest.
At seven in the morning, Nelson woke up and called the police station to inquire about the case investigation progress. He learned that Griffin and Taylor had been taken to the police station and were still being questioned.
Additionally, after they left last night, the police found blood traces on Nelson’s balcony and the lawn behind it, inferring that Pink was injured, but not seriously.
By expanding the search range, the police discovered a rental car about a hundred meters from Nelson’s house. When checking the trunk, they found a black bag inside, which contained a man who was tightly bound and sealed with tape.
After untying him, the police learned that he was an employee from the Blue Sapphire Hotel’s equipment department. He was knocked unconscious on his way home and woke up to find himself bound, unable to move. Everything was pitch black, and he could only sense the vibrations of being in a car. When the car stopped, no one came for him. When the police opened the trunk, he thought the person who had knocked him out was going to kill him and almost passed out again.
The employee was sent to the hospital for examination. Apart from a bruise on the back of his head, he had no more serious injuries. Since he didn’t see the perpetrator’s face, he was allowed to go home and rest after questioning.
Nelson finished the phone call and told Yu Yi the details.
Yu Yi pondered: “When we followed Pink yesterday, he didn’t go directly to your house. He first went northeast, and we lost track of him. Now it seems he went to attack that employee. If Pink could successfully assassinate you, his next step would be to kill this employee and then fabricate a scenario where he came to your house, leading to a confrontation resulting in mutual destruction or making it look like you discovered his collusion with Rodney.”
Nelson felt a chill after hearing her analysis.
Although Pink was injured and Griffin had been arrested, Yu Yi and Meng Qing still didn’t dare to be careless.
They initially suggested Nelson stay home these days, but since the vice president was arrested and matters originally handled by Griffin now required Nelson’s personal decisions, he insisted on going to the office.
At 7:45, Nelson’s driver came to pick him up. Meng Qing checked the car, confirming no abnormal electronic devices or explosives before letting Nelson get in, with Yu Yi following. Nelson was surprised when Meng Qing closed the door but didn’t get in, asking, “Mr. Li, aren’t you coming with us?”
Meng Qing smiled slightly: “I still need to find that ‘mischievous’ guy.” Otherwise, their mission wouldn’t be considered completely finished.
Yu Yi and Nelson arrived at the Blue Sapphire Hotel. Before he entered the office, Yu Yi went in first, checking for abnormal electronic devices and explosives like Meng Qing checked the car. Apart from the listening device she had installed the previous night, nothing was found. Then she went to the window to observe the surroundings. There were no buildings as tall as the Blue Sapphire Hotel within a hundred meters.
Meng Qing told Yu Yi that snipers could use large-caliber rifles to hit targets two kilometers away, so she closed the office’s venetian blinds and warned Nelson not to approach the window.
Nelson’s first task after entering the office was calling the chairman to explain Griffin’s actions.
Then he called the HR manager, temporarily revoking Griffin’s vice president and hotel manager positions, including suspending his assistant and secretary. All matters previously handled by Griffin would now be managed by Nelson himself until the police clarified the truth.
Since matters originally handled by Griffin now required Nelson’s personal attention, he was busier than usual. While Nelson worked, Yu Yi stayed in his office. Matters that could be confirmed verbally were handled by phone, and all documents requiring signatures were brought to the office door and passed to Nelson by Yu Yi.
In the morning, Meng Qing called.
Meng Qing asked on the phone: “Is everything okay there?”
“Yes, fine. How about you?”
“I went to the hospital once. Pink hasn’t treated his wounds, and the car parked in the Rainbow Hotel garage hasn’t moved. I checked his room. He returned last night, leaving a bit of blood in the bathroom, probably to treat his wound, and then left.”
“Be careful,” Yu Yi couldn’t help but advise.
“I know. You be careful too,” Meng Qing smiled and hung up, feeling good that someone was always thinking of him.
During lunch, Nelson’s meal was purchased by his secretary from a store, packaged, and only given to him after Yu Yi checked the packaging for any pinhole tampering.
The entire day passed peacefully, with Meng Qing occasionally contacting Yu Yi, updating her on the investigation’s progress.
Yu Yi believed that since Pink was injured and his employer Griffin was arrested, he should have left Black Pearl Island or be hiding somewhere recovering, and would no longer attempt to assassinate Nelson.
Meng Qing disagreed: “I checked the flight records, and he’s still on the island. In their line of work, reputation matters. Griffin has already paid, and before being notified that the commission is canceled, he will complete the task. Otherwise, no one would hire him in the future. Is Nelson about to get off work? I’ll come over and go back with you.”
“Okay.”
Meng Qing: Thanks, someone already cares about me.
Boss: Then I won’t worry about you anymore, and I’ll chat with your wife to pass the time when I’m bored.
Meng Qing: … Come on, let’s play a game and bury the hatchet.
Chapter 97 Pearl Sea Island (Complete)
Nelson finished the last of his work for the day, saw that Yu Yi and Meng Qing had ended their call, and walked to Yu Yi’s side, asking: “Tina, I’ve finished work and am preparing to go home, but before that, I want to go somewhere.”
Yu Yi advised: “Mr. Nelson, it’s best if you don’t go anywhere these days and go straight home.”
Nelson said: “I’m worried about someone’s safety and want to take her to my home where you can protect her. Or… could either you or Li Zhi protect her?”
Yu Yi was inwardly surprised. Who was this “she” he was worried about? But her face showed no curiosity. She made a phone call to Meng Qing: “Mr. Nelson has a… friend who also needs our protection.”
Then she handed the phone to Nelson, “Please tell Li Zhi her address and name. He will confirm her safety. I’ll take you home directly.”
Nelson told Meng Qing the address of a woman named Nora.
Meng Qing asked: “May I ask what Nora’s relationship is with you? And why do you think she might be Pink’s target?”
Nelson hesitated before saying: “She’s my birth mother…”
Both Yu Yi and Meng Qing were stunned, not expecting this at all.
It turned out Nora was only fifteen when she gave birth to Nelson, abandoning him and leaving her hometown. Nelson had searched for her unsuccessfully after becoming an adult, until last year when he finally found her living in poverty. He then brought her to a nursing home on the island under the guise of a charity fund.
Though he brought her here, Nelson had never revealed his identity. However, he visited her twice a week, and today was his usual visitation day.
After hearing Nelson’s explanation, Meng Qing was also moved, then asked: “You’re worried about her safety. Does Pink know about her relationship with you?”
Nelson said: “Griffin knows. He helped arrange her transfer to the nursing home on the island.”
Meng Qing agreed: “Okay, I’ll go to the nursing home. Tina will take you home.”
