Life Winner

Ten months later, Yue Sang gave birth to twins, a boy, and a girl, much to Gu Jinghan’s delight. He held a three-day celebration for the people to rejoice with. To the Empress Dowager’s surprise, Gu Jinghan didn’t seek other women during these ten months; her fears did not come true. She had to admit, this dog of a man had surprised her.

With two sons and a daughter, Gu Jinghan decided not to let the Empress have more children. He secretly asked for a sterilization soup from the imperial physician and drank it, giving the Empress love without burden.

A few years later, when a neighboring country invaded, General Xiao He requested to lead the battle. Having trained Xia’s army for years, the troops were brave, and Xiao He was an adept commander, sweeping through the enemy lines. Within three months, they secured a grand victory. During the battle, Xiao He’s prowess was undeniable, and his daughter Xiao Qingrou, along with her husband, fought heroically, making the enemy tremble at their sight.

Xiao He then requested to unify the empire, and Gu Jinghan granted it. With the formidable Xia army, Xiao He conquered east and west, unifying the realm after ten years. For his monumental service, Gu Jinghan conferred upon him the title of a king of different surname and bestowed upon him the Iron Certificate of Privilege.

With peace restored, Xiao He, now retired, looked at the emperor’s personal gift, solemnly saluting.

The scholar Fang Shiru became the prince’s tutor, nurturing Gu Chen into a wise ruler. His son-in-law also became a pillar of the state, both assisting the emperor and leaving a legacy of honor.

The Empress Dowager, who had spent her life guarding against Gu Jinghan, passed away peacefully without ever needing to use her methods to control her husband again, dying with a smile. The dog of a man had not disappointed her in the end.

Everyone had a good ending, but Yue Sang’s was the best. Her husband cherished her all her life, her children were filial, her mother-in-law was understanding, and her servants were loyal. Her life was rich and unmatched, a true winner in life.

Father’s Wish 1

“Jinghan, you’ve done exceptionally well in the criminal police team these past few years, especially with that major drug case you solved. I’ve already applied to the provincial office for your promotion to Deputy Director of our Xin City Public Security Bureau. There should be good news in a few days,” said Zhou Zhennan, the Director of Xin City Public Security Bureau, smiling at his subordinate.

Gu Jinghan stood up happily, saluted formally, “Thank you, Director.”

“Sit,” Zhou Zhennan gestured, taking a sip of tea, “Any news from the informant planted near Liu Changmin?”

“None,” Gu Jinghan shook his head.

Zhou Zhennan sighed, “After all these years, he’s probably dead. If he was alive, we could’ve nabbed Liu Changmin last time.” Liu Changmin was Xin City’s notorious drug lord, involved in drug production and trafficking with his brother Liu Changhua, but they never found direct evidence. Gu Jinghan had arrested Liu Changhua last time, but Liu Changmin escaped. Many informants placed near him had been killed, and the current one was lost after half a year.

“Don’t worry, as long as he continues to commit crimes, we’ll catch him eventually,” Gu Jinghan reassured.

“You’re right. Go back and wait for the news, prepare for your new role,” Zhou Zhennan said with a smile.

Gu Jinghan responded seriously, then smiled at Zhou Zhennan, turned, and left the Director’s office.

“Captain Gu, what did Director Zhou want with you? Is he promoting you to Deputy Director?” asked Deputy Team Leader Lu Fei as Gu Jinghan returned.

Gu Jinghan glanced at him with a smile but didn’t reply. Lu Fei was excited, “That’s great, with your talent, you should have been promoted long ago. Even if you didn’t solve the case, you’d still get the promotion.”

“Less chatter, have you finished your work?” Gu Jinghan was always low-key, especially since the promotion order hadn’t come down yet, he didn’t want to spread the news prematurely.

Lu Fei immediately straightened up, “Report, Captain Gu, the work is done.”

Gu Jinghan shook his head helplessly, always so formal.

“Captain Gu, if you get promoted, then what about me…” Lu Fei leaned in close, grinning as he asked. Gu Jinghan said, “Don’t worry, I’ve already mentioned to Chief Zhou today to promote you to captain.”

“Captain Gu, you’re really the best, I love you so much!” Lu Fei said, moving to hug Gu Jinghan. Gu Jinghan raised his hand to keep him at bay, then stood up and walked away.

“Captain Gu, it’s so early to leave work? Where are you going? Can I come along?” Lu Fei asked.

“I’m picking up my daughter. Do you want to come?” Gu Jinghan asked while walking.

Lu Fei’s expression changed upon hearing this, and he quickly waved his hands, “No, no, no, I can’t handle your little princess. I’d better stay and work overtime.” Gu Jinghan didn’t bother with him anymore and strode out the door.

A new officer asked Lu Fei, “Deputy Lu, you seem to be very scared of Captain Gu’s daughter.”

“Scared? No way, I’m not scared of her,” Lu Fei puffed out his chest, glanced around at everyone, and then said, “I’m terrified!”

“Hahaha…” Everyone burst into laughter.

The new officer turned to another colleague, “Is Captain Gu’s daughter very fierce? Why is Deputy Lu so scared of her?”

“Kids in their rebellious phase, you know,” the colleague replied.

“Rebellious phase? Captain Gu is almost fifty, is his daughter only in her teens?”

“Who says only teenagers can be rebellious? Even those in their twenties can be.”

“No way, can someone in their twenties still be rebellious?”

“It’s very possible, Gu’s daughter is a perfect example.”

“I don’t believe it, how rebellious can someone in their twenties be?”

Gu Jinghan drove to the school where his daughter Gu Yuanyuan was studying. He waited for a long time without seeing her, and when he called, she didn’t answer. He got out of the car, intending to ask one of her classmates, when a boy approached with a smile, “Are you Gu Yuanyuan’s dad?”

“Yes, that’s me. And you are?” Gu Jinghan didn’t recognize him.

The boy introduced himself, “I’m Gu Yuanyuan’s classmate, my name is Cheng Lin. Hello, Uncle.”

“Hello, Cheng Lin. Have you seen Yuanyuan? We agreed I’d pick her up, but I’ve waited half an hour and she hasn’t come out, and she’s not answering her phone. Is she still at school?” Gu Jinghan asked politely.

Cheng Lin’s smile faded slightly, “Uncle, follow me.” Seeing that he knew where his daughter was, Gu Jinghan quickly followed.

“Uncle, she’s right in there,” Cheng Lin said as they approached a place.

Gu Jinghan looked up to see it was a bar, his brows furrowed immediately. He thanked Cheng Lin and stepped inside. Inside, the atmosphere was filled with dim lights, loud music, and couples entwined in various states of affection. His frown deepened as he scanned the room for his daughter.

At that moment, Gu Yuanyuan was sitting with several men and women with brightly dyed hair, a cigarette dangling from her mouth, shaking dice in her hand, her foot propped on a stool, exuding a delinquent air.

“Roll, roll, roll!” the crowd around the table cheered.

Gu Yuanyuan rolled the dice, her face fell, “Damn, I lost again, what bad luck!” She tossed the dice away, removed the cigarette from her mouth, and was about to drink from a nearby glass when Gu Jinghan rushed over and snatched it away, his face burning with anger.
