“Who are you? How dare you take Yuanyuan’s drink? Do you want to cause trouble?” A man at the table stood up, pointing at Gu Jinghan angrily.
Gu Jinghan glanced coldly at the men who looked like drug users and said, “I’m her father.”
“Father?” The men exchanged looks and turned to Gu Yuanyuan.
Gu Yuanyuan scoffed, “He’s not my dad, I don’t know him.” She tried to smoke again.
Gu Jinghan stepped forward, snatched the cigarette, and said, “Yuanyuan, come home with me!”
“I’m not going!” Gu Yuanyuan grabbed her bag and walked away. Gu Jinghan turned to follow, but the men blocked his way. He was irritated, “Move aside.”
“We won’t let you bully Yuanyuan,” one of the men with yellow hair said, pointing at Gu Jinghan’s chest.
Gu Jinghan’s eyes darkened, he grabbed the man’s hand, and with a judo move, threw him heavily to the ground. As the others moved to attack, Gu Jinghan flashed his badge, “Want to assault an officer?”
“Police, run!” The men scattered in panic. The yellow-haired man tried to flee, but Gu Jinghan grabbed him, twisting his arm behind his back.
“Yuanyuan, help me!” the man yelled.
The commotion attracted onlookers, and Gu Yuanyuan, hearing the noise, returned, pushing through the crowd, “Let him go!”
“Let him go? He’s a drug offender, I’m taking him to the station,” Gu Jinghan said, dragging the man away.
Gu Yuanyuan chased after him, “Gu Jinghan, let him go, he’s my friend, how can I face people if you arrest him?”
Ignoring her, Gu Jinghan exited the bar with the man. Gu Yuanyuan followed outside, confronting Cheng Lin, “Cheng Lin, did you betray me?”
“No, Yuanyuan, let me explain,” Cheng Lin pleaded.
Gu Yuanyuan glared at him, “Stay out of my business, who are you to me?” She then hurried after Gu Jinghan.
Cheng Lin took a few steps forward to follow but stopped, intimidated by her anger.
Gu Jinghan pushed the man into his car, cuffed him in the back seat, and drove off swiftly.
“Wait for me, don’t leave, Gu Jinghan, don’t leave!” Gu Yuanyuan chased after the car as it drove away, throwing her bag down in frustration, standing with her hands on her hips, looking fierce.
Cheng Lin drove up, hesitated, then offered, “Yuanyuan, get in.”
In her anger, Yuanyuan wanted to tell him to leave but reconsidered, picked up her bag, and got in, “Follow Gu Jinghan!”
“Yuanyuan, he’s your father, you…”
“Mind your own business, who are you to me? Either shut up and drive or get out,” Yuanyuan snapped.
Cheng Lin sighed and remained silent.
Gu Jinghan stopped the car at the entrance of the Criminal Investigation Unit, took the man out, and escorted him into the police station.
“Captain Gu, weren’t you picking up your precious daughter? How come you’re back with someone?” Lu Fei, who was about to leave work, hurried over to inquire.
“Drug offender, bring someone in for questioning,” Gu Jinghan replied.
“It’s almost time to get off work, do we still need to interrogate?” Lu Fei asked.
Gu Jinghan shot him a sharp look.
Lu Fei straightened up immediately, “Yes, we’ll interrogate right away.”
Gu Jinghan brought the man into the interrogation room, cuffed him to a chair, and then asked, “What’s your name? How old are you? What do you do?”
“Who’s in your family? When did you start using drugs? Where do you buy the drugs?” A barrage of questions was thrown out, and the yellow-haired man sweated profusely, his lips trembling. “Speak!” Gu Jinghan roared in anger. The yellow-haired man was so frightened he almost wet his pants, “I didn’t…” Gu Jinghan grabbed his collar, his fist ready to strike. “Captain Gu, Captain Gu, let’s talk calmly, stay calm.” Lu Fei, seeing he was about to strike, hurriedly went over to pull him back and advised. Gu Jinghan clenched his fist, his eyes red with rage, but after a long while, he finally listened to Lu Fei and let go.
“Gu Jinghan, let him go, he’s my friend, he’s a good person, don’t take revenge on him!” Outside, Gu Yuanyuan banged on the door loudly. Gu Jinghan opened the door, and Gu Yuanyuan rushed in, but he pulled her out and locked the door. Gu Yuanyuan pushed him away in anger and cursed, “Gu Jinghan, why are you arresting him?” “Because he’s a drug addict!” Gu Jinghan said loudly. Gu Yuanyuan sneered, “In your eyes, is everyone in the world a drug addict? So great, huh, the anti-drug police, you can tell someone’s using drugs just by looking at them? Do I look like a drug addict too? Why don’t you arrest me as well!”
“Gu Yuanyuan, that’s enough!” Gu Jinghan’s anger was uncontrollable, his usual cold demeanor, combined with his status as a police officer, always gave off an intimidating aura, which now was even more oppressive. The other officers in the station, seeing their captain this angry for the first time, were too scared to make a sound. Gu Yuanyuan was also taken aback; although her father was strict, he had never lost his temper like this before. But thinking of something, she wasn’t afraid anymore; her eyes filled with resentment, “Why do you get to control me?”
“Because I’m your father!” Gu Jinghan stared at her. Gu Yuanyuan laughed in anger, “My father? Where were you for the first ten or so years of my life? When I was wronged, excluded, treated as an outsider, bullied, and beaten, where were you? Solving cases? Catching criminals? How noble of you, for your position, for your reputation, you neglected your own daughter. Do you deserve to be a father?”
Gu Jinghan clenched his fist, “I did neglect you; I thought your mother would take good care of you, I thought…”
“You thought, you thought, everything is about what you thought. Did you ever think about me? Do you know how I’ve lived these past ten years? Where were you when I needed you? Now you say you’re my dad and want to control me? Don’t you think it’s too late?”
Gu Yuanyuan’s eyes were red with sorrow and resentment. Gu Jinghan looked at the girl in front of him, thinking of her fate—being deceived by men, lured into drug use, having her organs harvested, and her body left in the wilderness—his anger was extinguished like water poured on fire, his heart aching. He took a deep breath, stepped forward, placed his hands on his daughter’s shoulders, and said with guilt, “Dad knows he neglected you before, making you suffer a lot. Dad will make it up to you, Yuanyuan, give dad a chance, will you?”
“Sure, if you resign, I’ll give you a chance!” Gu Yuanyuan looked up and said. Gu Jinghan was slightly taken aback. Seeing his hesitation, Gu Yuanyuan pushed him away fiercely, “Gu Jinghan, I knew your promise to make up for it was just empty words!” She turned to leave.
Gu Jinghan chased after her, “I agree!”
