Lone Hawk

The corridor of the morgue was long and dark, surrounded by a heavy musty smell. Jing Xin moved slowly, with Jiang Xiangyang quietly following behind her.

In fact, when he brought her to the morgue, he had wanted to leave. The others were waiting for him at the gambling den to discuss tomorrow’s plan, but seeing Jing Xin’s state, he was worried.

He silently cursed himself: “Damn, Jiang Xiangyang, you’re too sentimental. You’ll never amount to anything, always just a small-time thug.” Yet, despite this, he followed her.

A young man emerged from the corridor, grabbing Jing Xin, and cried, “Sister, don’t be like this. Go see Mom.” Jing Xin shook off his hand in disgust.

Pushing open the half-hidden door, her mother lay in the empty room. Jing Xin stood frozen in the doorway, trembling as she realized she was also responsible for her mother’s death. If only she could communicate with her one last time.

She dragged her heavy steps to her mother’s side, collapsing to her knees, holding her now cold hands. She finally accepted that her mother was gone. In this world, she would never find someone who truly loved her.

Her heartache turned into tears. “Mom, Mom, wake up. Mom, it’s all my fault. I’ll never make you angry again.”

“Mom, come back,” Jing Xin cried, collapsing on her mother’s body.

Jiang Xiangyang stood expressionless in the corridor, his gaze fixed on her through the partially open door.

The woman knelt on the ground, her shoulders shaking violently. Her voice was hoarse and she whined softly, tears streaming down her tightly closed eyes. She curled up, crying desperately.

His heart softened, a trace of tenderness spreading through him. He walked over to help Jing Xin up, but she startled, gripping the bedside tightly.

Stubborn, he thought, but held back the curse he wanted to express. Gently, he patted her back. “Jing Xin, stop crying. Your mother would be sad if she knew. You’ve been crying for over two hours.”

Jing Xin shook her head, blankly refusing to leave.

The morgue attendant urged them for the third time, yawning, “Young man, I’m closing up. Take her away. Don’t people die every day? Her crying might make my building collapse. Please go!”
