The attendant, having grown numb to life and death over decades in this job, was not heartless.
Jiang Xiangyang suddenly roared at him, “Shut up! She can cry as long as she wants. We’ll leave when she’s done.”
Say one more word, and I’ll destroy this place.”
The attendant looked at the young man beside him, whose face was filled with murderous intent, fists clenched, neck veins bulging. He shook his head, realizing he had encountered troublemakers, and said nothing more, turning to leave.
That night, the morgue remained open until dawn. Jiang Xiangyang stretched his stiff arm as Jing Xin awoke from her daze, hastily moving her head from his arm.
It was unbelievable that he had sat with her all night. He had always been indifferent to death, believing that life and death meant little to him. People come into this world only to die eventually—why be sad?
But seeing Jing Xin kneeling there, crying mournfully, her grief seeped into his heart. He suddenly understood the helplessness of life and death.
The first golden rays of morning light scattered across the land, dispersing the gray mist. Small birds chirped and fluttered past the treetops, heralding a brand new day.
At the morgue entrance, Jing Xin, with swollen eyes, thanked him, her thick nasal tone making her words hard to understand. “Xiangyang, thank you for accompanying me through this painful night.”
A man might not understand that this nightmare-like night, due to his presence, kept her from panicking. His quiet companionship brought warmth to her ice-cold heart.
Jiang Xiangyang nodded and turned to leave. He had many things waiting for him and felt he had already wasted too much time here. In his future life, various women might enter, but he would not allow her to consume too much of his energy, becoming an impediment to his career success. Love and women would only exist as supplementary elements in his life.
Chapter Twenty-Three: Nightmare
For three days, relatives came and went, filling the space with crying, bewilderment, blame, and sighs. Eventually, the world fell silent. Jing Xin and her brother sent their mother to the cemetery, placing the small box into the cement-cast pit. Only then did Jing Xin understand that life ultimately amounts to nothing.
Her mother had chosen an extreme method to end her own emptiness.
