Shapeshifters

“What have you been working on today? Journalists really work hard, don’t they?” Su Ying inquired.

“Oh, I was covering the progress of the archaeological dig at Zhidan Garden. Actually…” I started, then noticed Su Ying was intensely focused on me, reminiscent of when she talked about “looking for underwater people.” “What’s wrong?” she asked with some urgency. Her gaze made me feel a bit uncomfortable. I cleared my throat, deciding to use the information I had gathered to dispel her strange notions about underwater people. “Actually, progress is pretty slow. The interview today didn’t yield much new information compared to last time. However, there was an expert who came to re-examine some disputed details.”

“Any new discoveries about the builders or the function of the site?”

“The function is still under re-examination, but we can confirm it’s from the Yuan Dynasty. Otherwise, it’s much the same as before. As for new discoveries, after the expert’s input, there seem to be more doubts than before.”

“What doubts?”

“It’s about those iron ingots, wooden stakes, and such. After the expert’s explanation, everything seems questionable. We’ll have to wait a few more days for the final conclusions.”

Su Ying looked disappointed but quickly perked up, saying, “You’ll keep covering this, right? Let me know if there are any new developments!” Her attitude made me feel somewhat pressured. “Why are you so interested in this excavation?” I asked.

Su Ying shook her hair, adjusted her posture, and with a serious tone, said, “I have a thought, remember I mentioned the underwater people?” I sighed internally; I had guessed correctly, it was about the underwater people again. Despite this, I replied, “Yes.”

“I think,” Su Ying articulated each word carefully, “who could have built this site? Maybe, just maybe, this site was constructed by underwater people. I believe this could be where they held their rituals or celebrations.”
