Lying in bed, I entertained the idea that perhaps Su Ying knew some secret she couldn’t reveal, which is why she insisted that the Zhidan Garden ruins were related to the sea people. But in reality, the likelihood was minimal. I still thought in my heart that Su Ying was a girl prone to flights of fancy. In the middle of the night, I was awakened by a sharp cry not long after falling asleep. I thought it was that cat crying out in pain again, and it wasn’t until the cries stopped at dawn that I managed to fall back asleep. By almost noon, the sweltering heat woke me up again, and this time, I couldn’t get back to sleep no matter what. So, I got up and got ready to go to work at the newspaper office. Going to work in the afternoon was almost routine; only newcomers or idiots would often yawn their way to the office early. Because of the stifling heat, I was drenched in sweat by the time I reached the community gate. In such weather, one tends to be exceptionally lazy, so I naturally hailed a taxi to go to work. Once inside the car, the cold air from the AC cleared my head somewhat.
