Shapeshifters

I couldn’t help but find her ideas amusing. Having just discussed Zhidan Garden rationally with Ruan Xiuwen, my mind was filled with logical analysis, making Su Ying’s thoughts seem far-fetched. Like I thought, her obsession with underwater people had reached the level of a belief system. For example, Christians might attribute everything to God’s power, while Buddhists might say it’s Buddha’s blessing. Su Ying, on the other hand, directed everything towards the underwater people. So, any unexplained phenomenon would be linked back to them. I felt an urge to end the conversation and go home. However, Su Ying remained interested, saying, “I think this possibility is quite high…”

I wanted to retort, “Well, you didn’t say it was aliens, but from my perspective, isn’t the possibility just as likely?” However, I held back and calmly asked her, “Do you have any evidence? I mean, substantial proof. So far, there hasn’t been any sign indicating involvement from beyond human factors, right?” As I emphasized my tone, she immediately quieted down, appearing either speechless or hesitant to speak. I waited patiently for her response, and silence fell between us. She pursed her lips, her expression gradually showing some displeasure. Seeing her like this, I quickly tried to change the subject: “But that archaeologist from Beijing today was really interesting. He was very scholarly and quite talkative…” Su Ying clearly didn’t care about what I said afterwards. She seemed dazed, still brooding over my rebuttal of her view. I really thought her idea was far-fetched, and I felt that my approach had been quite polite, so I decided not to say more. After a while of this standoff, I got up to leave, saying I was tired. She didn’t say anything either, and I left the room rather disinterestedly, pondering if I had been too harsh, leading to this unpleasant parting.
