Tao Yu was now under his supervision, unable to die or escape, and unable to cure him. She could only eat and wait to die, but fortunately, Yue Linze had a talent for cooking, so her days weren’t unbearable.
One early morning, Yue Linze lifted her from her sleep. She opened her eyes groggily and mumbled, “What’s up?”
“It just rained outside,” Yue Linze said.
Tao Yu looked at him strangely, not understanding the relevance.
Yue Linze looked at her for a while, then finally carried her on his back and slowly walked outside. His leg was still slightly lame, making his walk unsteady, but his shoulders were broad and his arms strong. Tao Yu felt secure on his back.
They reached the courtyard, and Yue Linze tilted his chin, “Look, a rainbow.”
Tao Yu followed his gaze and then laughed.
The sky was clear blue with only one cloud, from which the rainbow emerged, spanning the entire sky. Refracted by sunlight, it displayed soft colors, beautiful and almost unreal, yet stirring the heart.
“How beautiful,” Tao Yu exclaimed.
Yue Linze also laughed, his eyes filled with a serene expression Tao Yu had never seen before, and this time, with his back turned, she wouldn’t miss it.
“It’s beautiful, but not as beautiful as you,” Yue Linze’s eyes held a depth of emotion no one could see.
Tao Yu was stunned, about to speak, when the entire world began to distort. Space started to break, with houses, trees, and stones gradually turning into fragments, then powder, and finally disappearing completely.
In this apocalyptic scene, Tao Yu’s legs returned to normal. She jumped down from Yue Linze’s back and faced him.
Yue Linze’s body began to disappear from his feet upward, but he seemed unaware, smiling and caressing Tao Yu’s face, kissing her lips and saying peacefully, “This is good.”
Tao Yu opened her mouth to speak, but he transformed into countless light points and vanished.
She blacked out and reopened her eyes in a familiar room. Staring at the wall clock, she realized the months in the mental world had been just two hours here.
She sat on the sofa for a long time, silently removing various devices from her head, then walked to the bedside, looking at the sleeping man.
