Veiled Heartbreak

The place was large but lacked proper fire safety equipment and was located in a residential building. When the fire broke out, there was nowhere to escape.

Two died, and thirteen were injured.

Jiang’s mother was so unlucky she didn’t even get a chance to be injured before she closed her eyes.

A man in uniform approached and asked, “Who is a relative of Zhou Huifang?”

Jiang Nuan slowly raised her hand: “I’m her daughter.”

“Oh, these are her belongings, please accept them with our condolences.”

The man handed over a bag containing several dusty bank cards, a passbook, and a phone.

Jiang Nuan walked step by step back home.

When Jiang’s mother lived here, it was quiet and tidy.

Jiang Nuan sat on the sofa, trembling as she opened the bag.

The passbook had a few crooked words written on it: Nuan’s dowry.

Jiang Nuan, with red eyes, opened it to see a fixed deposit of five million. If it were truly her dowry, it would ensure a lifetime of comfort.

Fu Yusen was also taken aback; this five million must have come from the ten million he had lent her.

Yet, Jiang’s mother had repaid nearly half, and the rest hadn’t been touched much.

Jiang Nuan turned on her mother’s phone, the screen filled with miscellaneous apps, clearly downloaded from ads.

On the screen, Jiang’s mother, with little makeup, still exuded beauty, standing next to a young Jiang Nuan, both beaming with joy.

Jiang Nuan remembered this was when she was seven, having won first place in school. Her parents were overjoyed and took her to the most famous local attraction for a day of fun.

It was a weekend, crowded. Jiang’s father got lost, and Jiang’s mother led her forward. At the highest point, they paid someone to take this photo.

Jiang Nuan reached out to touch the screen, her hollow eyes showing a hint of nostalgia. Unintentionally, she touched the call button, and the call log popped up.

The top contact was labeled: My dear baby daughter.

She clicked it. This call was almost dialed daily, but never answered.

The most recent attempt was yesterday, likely during the fire.

Jiang’s mother had called her precious daughter nine times.

Jiang Nuan’s eyes instantly reddened, tears rushing out.
