“Knock, knock!” Someone was knocking at the door, not loudly but intermittently. Shen Qian thought, couldn’t be that fast, could it? You Ran went to open the door, and from under his feet, a scruffy dog named Zaomao dashed in, running to Shen Qian’s bed, looking up at her with its big green bean-like eyes. Shen Qian was amused and touched its head, smoothing its fur, “Your woman’s foot is hurt.” Zaomao stood on its hind legs, leaning on the bed towards Shen Qian. Shen Qian chuckled, “My Zaomao knows to care for me.” You Ran watched, amused. His phone rang again, he picked it up, “Yes, I’ll come down to meet you.” He turned to Shen Qian, “Stay put, I’ll go down to get someone, she’ll check your foot later.” Before Shen Qian could process this, You Ran was gone. She pouted, playing with Zaomao.
After some time, her bedroom door opened again. First, You Ran came in, smiling at Shen Qian, followed by a woman. This woman, with her sharp eyebrows and fox-like eyes, had flaxen curly hair, a tall figure, and was dressed in what looked like designer clothes, exuding an aura of wealth and slight arrogance, which made her smile seem out of place. Upon seeing Shen Qian, she maintained her smile, but there was a fleeting look of helplessness in her eyes. “Hello, I’m Yu Cheng. I came to visit an old friend, didn’t expect to be back to my old profession.” She introduced herself, her face showing a mix of resignation. Shen Qian didn’t quite understand, but saw Yu Cheng sit on the bed and press on her ankle, making her yelp in pain. Yu Cheng seemed to understand something, turning to You Ran, “It’s nothing serious, probably a sprain. Some liniment and a week without walking should do it.” “You’re still very professional,” You Ran said with a teasing yet not teasing tone. Yu Cheng stood up, crossing her arms, “Do you regret not marrying me?” This statement shocked Shen Qian and even stunned You Ran momentarily. However, Yu Cheng didn’t seem to want to smooth things over, waiting earnestly for his response. “You’re already engaged,” You Ran smiled. Shen Qian noticed the sparkling diamond ring on Yu Cheng’s left hand, very bright and dazzling. Yu Cheng smiled, “Getting married in three months, will you come?” “Of course,” You Ran smiled calmly. Meanwhile, Shen Qian, the curious cat, felt there was some unspoken tension between them. Yu Cheng then turned to Shen Qian, who quickly straightened her expression and smiled back. “Remember to bring Miss Shen.”
Yu Cheng glanced sideways, and though there wasn’t outright provocation in her eyes, there was enough to convey a hidden hostility. “That depends on whether she’s willing,” she said.
Shen Qian originally had no good feelings towards Yu Cheng, and now, with this look, she felt even more annoyed. She laughed, “Since Miss Yu has invited me, why not go to the wedding? It’s good to see the world.”
Yu Cheng maintained her haughty posture, but suddenly her phone rang. She answered it, “Hello? Oh, I’m visiting a friend at the hospital, yeah, I’ll head over shortly.” After hanging up, Yu Cheng dared not look at You Ran anymore. However, You Ran remained nonchalantly calm, saying softly, “If he called you back, then go.”
Yu Cheng nodded, then nodded to Shen Qian as well, “I’ll be off then. Oh, and Miss Shen, remember to apply the topical Chinese medicine I brought for you once a day.” Shen Qian nodded in understanding and watched as both left. As the place emptied, Shen Qian’s mood inexplicably sank, and she couldn’t even figure out why. Just thinking about the relationship between Yu Cheng and You Ran made her inexplicably depressed. Shen Qian suddenly realized how little she actually knew about him.

Shen Qian always felt awkward around You Ran ever since meeting Yu Cheng. When she first met You Ran, even though he was blind, there was always a faint glow in his eyes, but in the past couple of days since he returned, Shen Qian noticed that the light in his eyes was now a flashing gold. During their occasional eye contacts, Shen Qian always felt he was looking at her, but she couldn’t be sure if he was actually looking at her.
On the third day, Shen Qian got up early to go to work, and as she opened her bedroom door, she bumped right into You Ran coming out. They made eye contact again. “Just hearing the sounds, I knew you were getting ready for work,” You Ran said, staring at her. Naturally, a blind person’s gaze might linger longer in one spot, but Shen Qian felt extremely uncomfortable with his gaze on her, feeling as if he could see right through her. So, she hopped two steps away from where she was and looked back; good, his gaze hadn’t moved. Shen Qian cleared her throat softly, “It’s about time, I need to get to work.”
“This is for you,” You Ran suddenly lifted his hand, revealing bread and milk. Shen Qian was taken aback, suddenly realizing that she had been so focused on his gaze that she hadn’t noticed the bread and milk in his hand. She couldn’t help but laugh, accepting his kindness, “Thank you.”
“Thank you for taking care of me these past few days.” Shen Qian chuckled, “You’ve been so well-behaved, you’ve hardly given me a chance to take care of you.”
You Ran’s expression stiffened for a moment, a wry smile on his face, “Is that so? Then I’ll be naughty today.”
“Ah?”
“You’ll see when you come back.” You Ran kept his usual faint smile.
Shen Qian couldn’t linger and left for work, feeling puzzled. What could You Ran do to be “naughty”? Smash the house, making her clean up? Pretend to be sick or fall so she has to take care of him? Or maybe run away from home so she has to find him? The more she thought, the more ridiculous her thoughts became, eventually imagining You Ran cooking her pet’s fur to eat. With this uneasy thought, she went to work, feeling unsettled.
Summer days are hot, and there are certain considerations when it comes to eating. Perhaps due to being too particular about food, many patients suffer, and dogs, being creatures that eat anything without much fuss, have an even higher chance of getting sick. It’s not an exaggeration to say that the doorstep of the pet hospital is worn down by dog owners. The pet hospital, with just a few rooms, was bustling with activity, much like Shen Qian’s gynecology and pediatric departments. Of course, the conditions were all over the place, lacking any coherence. After a busy morning with no time for lunch, Shen Qian realized she couldn’t go home to cook. She called You Ran.
“Hello?” came the voice from the other end.
“Mr. You, I’m sorry, but I’m very busy today and can’t come home to cook. Could you order takeout for lunch?”
“It’s okay, you take care of your work.”
“Thanks.” Before You Ran could say more, Shen Qian had already hung up and returned to work.
On the other end, You Ran hung up the phone with a look of regret. Old Zhang, who had been standing beside him, suddenly spoke, “Young Master, the car is ready, let’s go quickly. The master doesn’t like tardiness.”
You Ran sighed, “Didn’t he say he wouldn’t interfere with me anymore? Why call me over today?”
“Young Master, your eyes have been better for a few days now. The master is overjoyed that you’ve regained your sight. As a son, it’s only right to visit your father.”
“Son? Father?” You Ran gave a cold laugh, “Fine, I’ll go see my lofty father.”
Old Zhang was used to You Ran’s attitude. He knew that You Ran was usually indifferent, always smiling and approachable, but when it came to his father, his emotions would flare up. Old Zhang, being familiar with the housekeeper at the master’s residence, had heard some rumors. He had guessed why You Ran disliked his father.
